GRAMBLING, La. | The Grambling State University baseball team got back on the winning track on Saturday afternoon, defeating Southern 11-6 at R.W..E Jones Park at Wilbert Ellis Field.
Paced by a four hit performance by Cameron Bufford, the Tigers registered 15 total hits. Bufford went 4-for-5 with two doubles.
GSU pitcher Jacorey Boudreaux (7-2) showcased masterful command on the mound, working 8.1 innings, delivering seven strikeouts while allowing six runs on six hits
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Grambling State's John Garcia picked up a leadoff single in the bottom of second inning. Julian Murphy then smacked an RBI triple to the right centerfield gap to give the Tigers a 1-0 lead. Later in the inning, Terry Burrell III singled through the left side of the infield putting GSU on top 2-0.
- Leading 2-1 in the third inning, GSU tacked on three more runs in the frame to go up 5-1.
- In the sixth inning, Shemar Page sent bal sailing over the right field wall for a solo homer, extending the Tigers' lead to 6-2.
- Grambling State (19-23 overall, 14-6 SWAC) broke the game open in the seventh inning, building a 10-2 advantage. Page's two-RBI triple served as the highlight on the frame.
- Southern (14-26, 11-9) scored two runs in the top of the eighth, trimming GSU's lead to 10-4.
- Keylon Mack smashed an RBI double in the bottom of the inning, plating GSU's final run of the game.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
- Grambling State scored 11 runs on 15 hits, leaving 11 runners on base
- Southern plated six runs on six hits, while committing one error. The Jaguars stranded five runners
- SU's Anthony Fidanza (3-5) was nabbed with the loss, surrendering five runs on six hits in 3.0 innings pitched
- Emir Garrett faced two batters in the ninth inning.
- GSU leads the Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) in home runs with 44
