Grambling State Completes Sweep of Alcorn State

LORMAN, Miss. | The Grambling State University baseball team completed a weekend sweep of Alcorn State, defeating the Braves in seven innings, 14-4 at McGowan Stadium on Sunday afternoon. 

The Tigers trailed 1-0 after the first inning, but exploded for seven runs over the next two innings to blow the game open. 

Trevor Hatton, Cameron Bufford and Terry Burrell III each registered three hits in the offensive onslaught. Bufford also drove in four runs.

Connor Rudy (3-5) earned the win, allowing three runs on eight hits, to go along with eight strikeouts in 5.0 innings of work. 

HOW IT HAPPENED 

  • Alcorn State (1-19 overall, 1-8 SWAC) jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the opening frame, scoring on a defensive miscue from GSU.
  • The Tigers tied the game at 1-1 on a sacrifice fly by Daylon Ardoin. GSU jumped ahead 2-1 on an RBI double by Cameron Bufford. A single from John Garcia moved Bufford to third, who then scored the Tigers' third run of the game following an error by ASU's left fielder, Jermel Ford. 
  • GSU (11-17, 6-3) stretched its lead 7-1 with a four-run third inning. 
  • The Braves added a pair of runs over the next two innings, cutting GSU's advantage down to 7-3.
  • Bufford and Julian Murphy notched a couple of RBI singles in the fifth inning, extending Grambling State's lead to 9-3.
  • Leading 9-4 in the top of the seventh, the Tigers stretched its lead to 10, 14-4, with a five-run inning.
  • Alcorn State failed to score in the bottom of the frame, securing a mercy rule victory for GSU. 

INSIDE THE NUMBERS

  • Grambling State scored 14 runs on 13 hits, committed three errors, while leaving 13 runners on base
  • Alcorn State plated four runs on 10 hits, while making two errors. The Braves stranded 10 runners
  • The Tigers stole four bases. 
  • Trevor Hatton went 3-for-5 with a triple and one RBI
  • Julian Murphy went 3-for-4 with one RBI
  • Terry Burrell went 3-for-4 with a double and one RBI
  • Cameron Bufford drove in four runs, while going 2-for-4 with double 
  • Santiago Hungria, III made a relief appearance for GSU
  • ASU's Tyler Felston (0-3) was charged with there loss, giving up two runs on no hits, with two walks 

UP NEXT
Grambling State travels to Baton Rouge, La. to take on Louisiana State on Tuesday in a non-conference matchup. First pitch is set for 6:30 p.m.
