GSU Drops Midweek Game at No. 19 LSU

BATON ROUGE, La. | The Grambling State University baseball team grabbed a quick 2-0 lead, but couldn't cool off Louisiana State's hot bats, falling 16-3 in seven innings, at Alex Box Stadium at Skip Bertman Field on Tuesday evening

GSU jumped on top of LSU early, scoring two runs on four hits in the top of the first inning, but a slew of home runs, timely hits and clutch strikeouts, seized momentum for Louisiana State. 

Roy Peguero (1-3) was charged with the loss for the Grambling State, surrendering four runs on three hits in one inning of work.

HOW IT HAPPENED 

  • Trevor Hatton smacked a one out double to right field for GSU's first hit of the game. Shemar Page moved him over to third base on an infield single to shortstop. John Garcia scored Hatton on another infield single, giving Grambling State (11-18) a 1-0 lead
  • Later in the first inning, Julian Murphy gave GSU a 2-0 lead with an RBI single to right field. 
  • In the bottom of the inning, LSU tied the game at 2-2 on a two run run home run by Jacob Berry
  • Louisiana State (20-9) jumped in front, 3-2, with a leadoff solo homer in the bottom of the second inning. LSU added three more runs to, building a 6-2 lead with one away. Santiago Hungria, III entered the game to pitch with the bases loaded, and got GSU out of the jam with back-to-back strikeouts. 
  • LSU put the game out of the reach in the fourth inning, scoring nine runs to extend its lead to 15-2.
  • Grambling State scored one more run in the fifth inning when Cameron Buford hit a sacrifice fly to right field. 

INSIDE THE NUMBERS

  • Grambling State scored three runs on five hits, committing one error, while leaving six runners on base
  • Louisiana State plated 16 runs on 18 hits. LSU stranded 13 runners
  • LSU hit four home runs
  • Emir Garrett, Santiago Hungria, III, Heath Backhus, Malik Abdul, and Jacorey Boudreaux  made a relief appearances for GSU
  • LSU's Grant Taylor (3-0) earned the win, going two innings and allowing two runs on four hits five strikeouts

UP NEXT
Grambling State returns home for a weekend series versus Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) opponent Arkansas-Pine Bluff. The series begins on Friday with first pitch set for 6 p.m.
