Page’s 12 Ks Fuels GSU Victory over UAPB

GRAMBLING, La. | In yet another dominant performance on the mound, Grambling State University pitcher Shemar Page tied a season-high, delivering 12 strikeouts in a 14-3 Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) victory over Arkansas-Pine Bluff, at Wilbert Ellis Field at R.W.E. Jones Park on Friday night.

This marked third time this season that Page (4-3) struck out 12 batters. It was the fourth time that the right-handed hurler surpassed the double-dight strikeout plateau. On Friday, he worked 6.0 innings, allowing three runs on seven hits, with one walk. 

Not to be outshined by Page, Grambling State's bats were also on fire. The Tigers scored 14 runs on 15 hits and two errors. Six GSU batters registered multi-hit games, Julian Murphy was the toughest out for the Tigers, going 3-for-3.

Terry Burrell III and Keylon Mack accounted for seven of GSU's RBIs, with Burrell notching four RBI and mack driving in three runs.

The game ended in seven innings due to the 10-run mercy rule. It was the fourth consecutive conference game that GSU won by mercy rule. 

HOW IT HAPPENED 

  • Grambling State (12-18 overall, 7-3 SWAC) crafted a big lead early in the contest, scoring five runs in the bottom of the second inning. 
  • A trio of singles by Cameron Bufford, Julian Murphy and David Valoy Jr. loaded the bases with one out. Daylon Ardoin was hit by a pitch, allowing GSU to plate the first run of the game. A mishandled ground ball at shortstop allowed Murphy to score and put the Tigers up 2-0. 
  • Terry Burrell III tagged a hard hit bases clearing triple, his first of the year, to left centerfield, extending GSU's advantage to 5-0.
  • Keylon Mack picked up his first hit and RBI of the night a single to right field, stretching the Tigers' lead to 6-0 in the third frame.
  • Arkansas-Pine Bluff (6-18-1, 3-7) got on the board in the fourth inning, courtesy of a solo home run by Jakobi Jackson. The Golden Lions tacked on another run later in the inning, trimming GSU's lead down to four, 6-2. 
  • GSU broke the game open in the bottom of the fifth, putting up eight runs. Four of Grambling State's fifth inning RBI were the product of three doubles 
  • UAPB added one more run in the top of the seventh. 

INSIDE THE NUMBERS

  • Grambling State scored 14 runs on 15 hits, committing one error, while leaving five runners on base
  • Arkansas-Pine bluff plated three runs on seven hits, while making two errors on defense. The Golden Lions stranded six runners
  • Julian Murphy went 3-for-3
  • Keylon Mack went 3-for-4 with three RBI and a double
  • David Valoy jr. went 3-for-4 with RBI and a double
  • Terry Burrell III drove in four runs, going 2-for-4 with a triple
  • Cameron Bufford and John Garcia both went 2-for-4, with an RBI and double apiece.
  • Shemar Page leads the SWAC in total strikeouts with 80. His 12 strikeouts on Friday tied season-high marks set against Prairie View A&M on March 18 and Alcorn State on April 1. 
  • Heath Backhus made a relief appearance for GSU in the top pf the seventh.
