GSU Registers 21 Hits in Mercy Rule Victory over UAPB

GRAMBLING, La. | The Grambling State University baseball team racked up 21 hits in a 20-10 victory, in seven innings, over Arkansas-Pine Bluff on Saturday afternoon at Wilbert Ellis Field at R.W.E. Jones Park.

Saturday's win was GSU's fifth consecutive victory to come via the 10-run mercy rule. To underscore just how dominant the Tigers were at the plate, every batter in GSU's starting lineup registered a hit. 

Terry Burrell III led the hit parade, going 5-for-6 with a triple and RBI and three runs scored. Cameron Bufford drove in five runs, four of which came courtesy of a grand slam in the fist inning. The Chicago, Ill. native went 2-for-3. 

Trevor Hatton and Daylon Ardoin both drove in four runs apiece, and David Valoy Jr. knocked in three. 

GSU starting pitcher Jacorey Boudreaux (4-2) notched his fourth win in a row, going 4.0 innings, surrendering four runs on four hits with four strikeouts and five walks. 

HOW IT HAPPENED 

  • Grambling State (13-18 overall, 8-3 SWAC) had another quick start, putting up six runs in the first inning. Terry Burrell III hit a game-opening triple to right centerfield. Trevor Hatton hit an RBI double to the same spot in the next at-bat, giving GSU the 1-0 lead. 
  • Later in the inning, with the bases loaded and no outs, Cameron Bufford squared up a pitch and sent it flying over the left field wall for a grand slam, extending the Tigers' advantage to 5-0. 
  • Arkansas-Pine Bluff (6-19-1, 3-8) scored the next four runs of the contest, trimming GSU's lead to 6-4 through three and half innings.
  • Grambling State exploded for seven runs in the bottom of the fourth inning to take a commanding 13-4 lead.
  • UAPB pulled back within striking distance in the the top of the fifth, cutting the lead to 13-7. However, another huge inning by the Tigers dealt a massive blow to the Golden Lions' hopes of a comeback. GSU plated five runs, highlight by an RBI double from Daylon Ardoin, building an 18-7 lead. 
  • Trailing 19-8 in the top of the seventh inning, Arkansas-Pine bluff nearly avoided the mercy rule loss when Edwin De La Cruz hit a two-run homer, shrinking GSU's advantage to 19-10. In the bottom of the inning, John Garcia smoked a walk-off RBI to centerfield, securing the 20-10 triumph

INSIDE THE NUMBERS

  • Grambling State scored 20 runs on 21 hits, committing three errors, and leaving seven runners on base
  • Arkansas-Pine bluff plated 10 runs on 10 hits, while making one error on defense. The Golden Lions stranded 11 runners
  • Trevor Hatton went 4-for-6 with four RBI and two doubles
  • David Valoy Jr. went 3-for-5 with three RBI
  • Daylon Ardoin went 1-for-4 with four RBI
  • JC Bonilla and Santiago Hungria III made relief appearances for GSU
  • Andrew Duran (1-5) was charged with the loss, allowing 11 runs on nine hits.
