Page Strikes Out 11 in GSU Victory at UAPB

GRAMBLING, La. | Grambling State University pitcher Shemar Page pitched another gem on Thursday afternoon, striking out 11 batters in eight innings of work as GSU defeated Arkansas-Pine Bluff 11-3 at Torii Hunter Complex.

Page (8-4) dominated the Golden Lions the entire day, only allowing one run on four hits and issuing no walks. Page's 11 strikeouts on Friday, puts him at 135 on the season, just 14 away from tying the single-season school record of 149 strikeouts. 

Offensively, Grambling State exploded for 18 hits, including six doubles and one home run. John Garcia went 4-for-5 with with two doubles, a home run and four RBI. Terry Burrell III, Julian Murphy and David Valoy Jr. all tallied three hits apiece. 

HOW IT HAPPENED 

  • In the top of the second inning, Grambling State (23-29 overall, 18-10 SWAC) opened up a 2-0 lead on UAPB (13-34-1, 9-19). Aries Gardner got on base with a two-out double to left field. David Valoy Jr. then drove him around to score, giving GSU a 1-0 lead. Terry Burrell III then brought Valoy in to score with a single down the right field line. 
  • John Garcia helped GSU tack on another run in the third inning with a RBI double to left field, scoring Jarifcur Parker, extending the Tigers' advantage to 3-0
  • The top of the fourth inning resembled the second, as Julian Murphy hit a leadoff single. Gardner followed with a double to right field, advancing Murphy to third. Valoy Jr. smack a two-RBI double to centerfield, putting the Tigers on top 5-0.
  • Burrell continued the hot hitting later in the inning, hitting a double of his own. Burrell ended up scoring all the way from second base on a wild pitch, stretching the lead to 6-0
  • In the top of the seventh inning, Garcia smacked his 10th homer of the season with a three-run shot over the left field wall, building 9-0 lead for Grambling State.
  • GSU scored two more runs in the bottom top of the ninth, crafting an 11-1 lead

INSIDE THE NUMBERS 

  • Grambling State scored 11 runs on 18 hits. The Tigers left eight runners on base
  • Arkansas Pine-Bluff finished with 3 runs on 5 hits, leaving six runners stranded 
  • GSU committed two errors
  • UAPB made four errors
  • Terry Burrell III went 3-for-5 with an RBI and a double
  • Julian Murphy went 3-for-4 with two RBI
  • Areies Gardner went 2-for-4 with two doubles
  • David Valoy Jr. went 3-for-5 with three RBI and two doubles
  • Keith Carpenter and Heath Backhus made relief appearances for GSU
  • Trenton Ferguson (3-8) was charged with the loss for UAPB, allowing six runs on 13 hits in 6.1 innings pitched
