GRAMBLING, La. | The Grambling State University baseball team erased a seven-run deficit, to rally back and defeat Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) opponent Arkansas-Pine Bluff 18-13 at the Torii Hunter Baseball Complex on Friday afternoon.
The Tigers trailed 12-5 after three innings, but sped past the Golden Lions, outscoring UAPB 13-1 over the final six innings.
GSU registered 17 hits, with seven batters recording RBIs. The Tigers tallied six extra-base hits with two doubles, two triples and two home runs. Aries Gardner drove in four runs while going 3-for-4 on the day. Keylon Mack and David Valoy Jr. both drove in three runs. Trevor Hatton, John Garcia, and Cameron Bufford all notched two RBI, while Julian Murphy and picked up one RBI.
Santiago Hungria, III (2-1) picked up his second victory of the season, entering the game in relief of Jacorey Boudreaux. Hungria pitched 4.0 innings, allowing six runs on three hits, with one strikeout and two walks.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Grambling State (24-29 overall, 19-10 SWAC) built a 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning. Terry Burrell III opened the game by reaching base on a fielding error at shortstop. John Garcia moved Burrell over to second base with a two-out single to left field. Cameron Bufford cleared the bases with a two-RBI triple.
- Arkansas-Pine Bluff (13-35-1, 9-20) hopped in front, 3-2, in the bottom of the first, courtesy of a three-run home run. The Golden Lions extended their lead to 7-2 with a four-run second inning.
- GSU responded in the top of the third, loading the bases with two outs. Aries Gardner laced a two-RBI single to left field, shrinking the deficit to 7-4. David Valoy Jr. stroked a double to left field, plating another run, setting the score at 7-5.
- After falling behind 12-5 in the bottom of the third, Grambling State utilized clutch hitting to keep pace with UAPB. Trevor Hatton hit a lead-off solo home run, his ninth of the season, in the top of the fourth. GSU continued to take advantage of shaky pitching, as Garcia was hit by a pitch and Buford drew a walk. After Julian Murphy got on base and another Tiger run scored, UAPB made a pitching change.
- Bufford scored on a wild pitch in the next at-bat, cutting Arkansas-Pine Bluff's lead to 12-8. Gardner made the score 12-9 with an RBI single.
- GSU continued to chi[p away at the Golden Lions' lead in the top of the fifth inning. After Hatton drew a leadoff walk, Garcia doubled to right centerfield, scoring the speedy Hatton from first, pulling GSU within two runs, 12-10. Later in the frame, Gardner smacked a two-out single to bring Garcia across to plate, slimming UAPB's advantage to 12-11.
- In the sixth inning, following a leadoff walk issued to Jarficur Parker, Hatton tripled to right field, tying score at 12-12. Garcia put the Tigers back on top, 13-12, with a sacrifice fly. Valoy Jr. stretched GSU's lead to 15-12 with a two-RBI single, which is the margin the Tigers would carry into the bottom of the sixth.
- Keylon Mack got on the RBI train with a three-run homer in the top of the of the seventh inning, handing GSU an 18-13 lead.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
- Grambling State plated 18 runs on 17 hits, leaving 15 runners on base. The Tigers committed no errors
- Arkansas Pine-Bluff finished with 13 runs on 17 hits, leaving nine runners stranded
- UAPB made three errors

- Jacorey Boudreaux got the start on the mound for GSU, pitching two innings, surrendering nine runs on seven hits, while striking out three batters.
- JC Bonilla also made a relief appearance for the Tigers, tossing three full innings, holing the Golden Lions to just one run on five hits, striking out four batters
- UAPB's Brandon Little (1-4) was tabbed with the loss, allowing seven runs on eight hits, through 4.2 innings of relief work
