GRAMBLING, La. | The Grambling State University baseball team finished the 2022 regular season in style, earning a 16-2 victory over Arkansas-Pine Bluff in 7 innings at the Torii Hunter baseball Complex on Saturday afternoon.
The Tigers utilized a 10-run fourth inning, punctuated by a grand slam by Terry Burrell III, to break the game open. Nine different GSU batters notched hits, and eight Tigers drove in runs.
Connor Rudy (5-8) earned his fifth victory of the year, holding the Golden lions to just two runs on seven hits. The lefty also fanned three batters.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Grambling State (25-29 overall, 20-10 SWAC) wasted no time getting its two batters of the day got base, putting pressure on Arkansas-Pine Bluff (13-36-1, 9-21). Terry Burrell III hit a lead-off single, and Jarficur Parker moved him to third with a double to left field. Trevor Hatton picked up the RBI, scoring Burrell on a grounder to shortstop, giving GSU a 1-0 lead.
- After UAPB tied the game at 1-1, GSU got back to work in the second inning. Keylon Mack flared a lead-off single to right field. Aries Gardner legged out a triple to left center field, scoring Mack from first base. Gardner then scored on a wild pitch, extending the Tigers' lead to 3-1.
- GSU broke the game open in the top of the fourth inning, with a 10-run inning. With the score set at 3-2, a pair of singles to open the inning put pressure on the Golden Lions one again. Parker singled to left field, plating another Tiger run. In the next at-bat, GSU utilized a double steal, allowing David Valoy Jr., while Parker stole second base, placing GSU on top 5-2.
- Later in the inning, John Garcia stretched Grambling State's lead to 7-2 with a bases clearing double. Julian Murphy joined the RBI parade with a run scoring single to make the score 8-2.
- Burrell put the cherry on top on the inning for GSU, belting a grand slam, putting the Tigers comfortably ahead, 13-2.
- GSU drew a bases loaded walk in the fifth inning, upping the score to 14-2.
- Nasir Frederick wrapped up the scoring with an RBI triple. Frederick ended up scoring on a a throwing error, securing the mercy-rule victory for the Tigers.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
- Grambling State plated 16 runs on 16 hits, leaving eight runners on base. The Tigers committed no errors
- Arkansas Pine-Bluff finished with two runs on seven hits, leaving six runners stranded
- UAPB made two errors

- Emir Garrett and Corben Peters pitched in relief, allowing no hits in two innings.
- Damon Elarton (3-7) was charged with the loss, giving up seven runs on nine hits

Grambling State gears to travel to Birmingham, Ala. to compete in the 2022 SWAC baseball Tournament at Regions Field, home of the Birmingham Barons. Tournament seeding will be announced by the conference office on Sunday.
