Garcia Drives in Three Runs In Loss

PRAIRIE VIEW, Texas | Sophomore catcher John Garcia registered three RBI and a home run, but it wasn't enough to will the Grambling State University baseball team to victory on Saturday afternoon, falling to Prairie View A&M, 9-7, in a Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) game at Tankersley Field.

Garcia went 2-for-3 with two-run homer in the top of the third inning.

The Tigers led 7-5 late in the contest, but couldn't thwart a late rally by PVAMU in the seventh inning. 

HOW IT HAPPENED 

  • Trailing 3-0 in the top of the second inning, and Trevor Hatton on first base, John Garcia laced a single to left field scoring Hatton from first base to get the Tigers on the board. Later in the inning, Terry Burrell III singled to the shortstop, plating Garcia and cutting Prairie View A&M's lead to 3-2.
  •   PVAMU scored on a wild pitch in the bottom of the second
  • Garcia gave Grambling State another spark in the third inning with two-run home run, tying the game 4-4.
  • GSU snagged a 6-4 lead in the the top of fifth, thanks to an RBI single by Julian Murphy , and a sacrifice fly by Cameron Bufford
  • After the Panthers cut the lead to 6-5, GSU scored on a passed ball to go up 7-5 in the top of the seventh. 
  • However, Prairie View A&M ceased control of the game in the bottom of the frame, scoring four runs, taking a 9-7 lead. 

INSIDE THE NUMBERS 

  •  Grambling State scored seven runs on 10 hits and left seven runners base
  •  Prairie View A&M finished with nine runs on 13 hits, leaving six runners stranded 
  • Trevor Hatton went 2-for-5
  • Terry Burrell III went 2-for-5 with an RBI
  • Julian Murphy went 2-for-4 with an RBI
  • Cameron Bufford went 1-for-1 with an RBI
  • Jacorey Boudreaux (7-3) was tagged with the loss after allowing eight runs on nine hits in six innings of work. He also struck out seven batters
  • JC Bonilla worked two innings in relief, striking out three batters and allowing one run on four hits
  • Joshua Lazabal (2-3) got the win in relief for the PVAMU, holding GSU hitless in 4.1 innings of action while allowing one unearned run. He struck out six batters.

Grambling State concludes its series at Prairie View A&M on Sunday afternoon. First pitch is set for 1 p.m. at Tankersley Field.
