PRAIRIE VIEW, Texas | Powered offensively by 13 hits and two home runs, the Grambling State University baseball team picked up an important Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) 13-10 victory over Prairie View A&M on Sunday afternoon at Tankersely Field.
Cameron Bufford and Keylon Mack both hit homers for GSU, driving in a total of six runs. Bufford went 2-for-4 with with three RBI, While mack went 3-for-4 with three RBI as well.
Aries Gardner and Jarficur Park also had multi-hit game for the Tigers, with Gardner going 2-for-3 with three RBI and Parker going 2-for-3 with two RBI.
The win improves GSU to 21-26 overall, 16-8 in the SWAC.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Grambling State opened the scoring the third inning when Jarficur Parker lace an RBI single to right field, scoring Julian Murphy who reached on an error to open the inning. Shemar Page extended GSU's lead to 2-0 with an RBI single of his own. Trevor reached base an another Prairie View A&M error, scoring Page, building a 3-0 lead.
- Later in the inning, Keylon mack smoked a three-run home run sailing over the centerfield wall, putting GSU on top 6-0
- In the bottom of the frame, PVAMU (28-20, 18-6) scored four runs, highlights by a two-run homer by Tre Turner.
- In the top of the fifth, Keylon Mack got on base with a two-out single. Cameron Bufford hit two-run jack to to left field, stretching GSU's advantage to 8-4.
- GSU took advantage off a pitching change in to begin the sixth inning. After Nasir Frederick drew a walk and Terry Burrell III was hit by a pitch, Jarficur Parker drill RBI double. Aries Gardner followed with a single up the middle, plating two more runs and giving the Tigers a 11-5 lead.
- Gardner tacked on another RBI single in the eighth inning, strengthening GSU's lead, 12-5. The Tigers added one more run in the ninth inning on. Sacrifice fly by Bufford.
- Prairie View A&M didn't go down easily, however. The Panthers rallied for five runs in the bottom of the ninth, but ran out of steam, allowing GSU to to clinch the series with the 13-10 victory
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
- Grambling State plated 13 runs on 13 hits. The Tigers left five runners on base
- Prairie View A&M finished with 10 runs on 15 hits, leaving 12 runners stranded
- Connor Rudy (4-8) earned the win in relief, pitching 5.2 innings, allowing six runs on nine hits, to along with five strikeouts and three walks.
- Roy Peguero got the start for GSU, surrendering four runs on five hits, with two strikeouts in 2.2 innings of work.
- Santiago Hungria, III picked up his first save of the season, tossing 0.2 innings, allowing one hit,
- PVAMU's Victor Mendoza (4-5) was tabbed with the loss after giving up eight runs on seven hits in 5.0 innings pitched.
- Four Prairie View A&M pitchers made relief appearances
