VICKSBURG, Miss. | The Grambling State University women's soccer team picked up its second victory of the season on Sunday afternoon, beating Alcorn State 2-1 at Sports Force Park in Vicksburg, Miss.
The victory market the Tigers' best start since the 2019 season.
Although ASU is in the Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC), Sunday's contest was a non-conference match.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- GSU (2-0) built a 1-0 lead in the 25th minute when Imogen Fowler deposited a shot in the back on the net off of an assist from Beatriz Kretteis.
- Alcorn State (0-2) tied the game at 1-1 with a goal just before halftime.
- In the 67th minutes, Kretteis put the Tigers up for good with her first goal of the year. Kretteis was set up for the shots by Samantha Diaz who delivered a masterful crossing pass into the box.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
- Grambling State outshot ASU 23-9. The Tigers put 11 shots on frame.
- GSU's Madison Covey-Taylor played all 90 minutes in goal, making five saves and surrendering one goal.
- For Alcorn State, Mikayla Shaughnessy allowed two goals with nine saves
- The Lady Tigers attempted seven corner kicks, while the Braves were given two.
- Grambling State committed nine fouls, Alcorn State was called for 14 fouls.
