GSU Defeats Southern in SWAC Showdown

BATON ROUGE, La. | Freshman forward Karlyn Judge's first half goal was all the Grambling State University women's soccer team would need to defeat rival Southern on Sunday afternoon at A.W. Mumford Stadium. The Lady Tigers picked up their first Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) victory of the season.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Judge got the party started early for GSU (4-6-1 Overall, 1-0-1 SWAC), striking the back of the net in the 7th minute. It was her second goal of the season.
  • Southern (3-7-1, 0-2-0) nearly tied the game up in the 19th minute with a penalty kick opportunity, but GSU goalkeeper, Madison Covey-Taylor thwarted the opportunity with a clutch save.
  • The Lady Tigers' defense clamped down on the Jaguars the rest of the week, keeping SU off of the scoreboard and securing the 1-0 decision.

WHAT COACH WAGAR SAYS

"Today was a battle for both teams and the heat index was over 100 degrees on the turf. Conference wins are hard to come by. Southern has a very talented team that was prepared and well coached. I'm proud of our team defensive effort and hanging tough to secure our second shutout in a row."
