PINE BLUFF, Ark. | Phylicia Allen posted her first career double-double on Monday night, but the Grambling State University women's basketball team suffered a 64-57 setback versus the University of Arkansas-Pine Bluff at the H.O. Clemmons Arena.
Allen poured in 11 points with 10 rebounds in the effort. She also contributed three steals and one assist.
The dynamic duo of Leah Morrow and Colbi Maples led the Lady Tigers in scoring, both putting up 13 points. Morrow continued to be disruptive on the defensive end, snatching five steals. She added six assists and two rebounds to her total.Â
Both teams shot under 40 percent from the floor, with GSU (5-13 overall, 4-3 SWAC) connecting on 33.9 percent of its field goal attempts (21-of-62). UAPB (6-12, 4-4) hit on 36.5 percent of its shots, going 19-of-52. Coriah Beck led three UAPB scorers into double figures, scoring a game-high 17 points.Â
Arkansas-Pine Bluff succeeded in getting to the charity stripe, working its way to the line 33 times, compared to GSU's 15 trips to the free throw line. The Lady Tigers went 9-for-15 on free throws, while the Golden Lions sank 22 of their attempts.Â
Grambling State was forced to play catch up for the majority of the night, coming close to grabbing the lead, but never quite being able to find the consistency to push ahead.Â
After trailing 29-21 at halftime, GSU found a bit of momentum in the early stages of the third quarter. Down 37-29 with 6:41 to go in the third, a jumper by Allen pulled the Lady Tigers within six. Following a free throw by the Tigers and a layup by UAPB's Maya Peat, Kaci chairs drained a 3-pointer, trimming the Golden Lions' lead to 39-35 at the 5:16 mark.
Later in the period, UAPB built its largest lead of the contest at 49-38.
GSU put together a late push in the 4th quarter. Down 58-49 with 1:29 to play, freshman guard Jazmine Jackson nailed a 3-pointer to pull the Lady Tigers back within six points of the Golden Lions. After UAPB knocked down a pair a free throws, Morrow drove to the hoop to keep GSU within six, 60-54 with 36 seconds to go.
Trailing 62-54 with 19 seconds remaining, Colbi Maples drained a three, cutting the deficit to five points, but that would be all the Lady Tigers could manage in the fourth quarter.Â
