Grambling State Women’s Soccer Remains Undefeated in SWAC, Beats JSU 2-1

GRAMBLING, La. | The Grambling State University women's soccer team earned a hard-fought 2-1 win over Southern Athletic Conference (SWAC) defending champion Jackson State on Friday afternoon at the GSU Soccer Complex.
 
It was late game heroics by junior midfielder Morgan Johnson that lifted the Tigers to victory. Her goal in the 81st minute was the clincher for GSU. 
 
The win improved the Tigers to 11-4-3 overall and 7-0 in conference play. Dating back to last season, GSU stretched its SWAC regular season unbeaten streak to 13 games. 
 
JSU fell to 6-9-0, 5-2 in the SWAC. 
 
How It Happened 
  • Both teams opened the game with high intensity, trying to create quick scoring opportunities. Grambling State cracked the scoreboard first when Karlyn Judge delivered a beautiful shot into the back of the net, making it 1-0 GSU with the 9th minute. Samantha Diaz and Aria Whitney were credited with assists. 
  • GSU had an opportunity to push its lead to 2-0 in the 26th minute when Khori Banks was foul inside the penalty box and was awarded a penalty kick. Jackson State goalkeeper Jordan Hamilton denied the PK, keeping JSU within one goal. 
  • In the 35th minute, JSU's Kendyl Terrell scored an equalizing goal, making it 1-1. 
  • Both teams battled fiercely in the second half, but a foul on Jackson State led to free kick for Grambling State. Diaz sent a shot sailing toward the JSU net that was saved and careened of the crossbar. Johnson corralled the rebound and pushed the ball into the goal for the game-winning score. 
 
Inside the Numbers
  • Grambling State outshot JSU 9-7. GSU put five shots on goal while Jackson State placed four on frame. 
  • Jackson State committed 15 fouls. Grambling State committed five fouls. 
  • JSU held a 6-4 advantage on corner kicks.
  • Madison Covery-Taylor played all 90 minutes in goal for GSU, making three total saves. 
 
Up Next
Grambling State gears up for a big Senior Day matchup versus Southern on Sunday, Oct. 22. First kick is scheduled for 12 p.m. at the GSU Soccer Complex. If GSU defeats the Jaguars, GSU clinches the SWAC Regular Season Championship and secures the No. 1 seed in the SWAC Women's Soccer Tournament.
