RUSTON, La. | When the Grambling State University women's soccer team needed a big play,
Kayla Reed stepped up and scored the game-winning goal to hand the Tigers a 2-1 triumph over Louisiana Tech.
The win marked the first-ever victory for Grambling State (7-4-3) over cross-town foe Louisiana Tech (3-8-3) in women's soccer.
How It Happened
- GSU took a 1-0 lead in the 10th minute when Samantha Diaz delivered a ball into the box on a set piece, that was received by Beatriz Kretteis. Kretteis redirected the ball into the net for the score.
- La. Tech's Avery Kyle tied the game 1-1 with a goal in the 31st minute. The score remained tied heading into halftime.
- Both teams battled neck-and-neck throughout the majority of the second half and it seemed that both teams would settle for a draw. However, GSU forged ahead in waning moments of the game when Kretteis sent a cross into the box that Reed sent sailing past the Lady Techsters' goalkeeper in the 88thminute, giving GSU a 2-1 lead.
- The Tigers clamped down on defense, securing the victory.
Inside the Numbers
- Louisiana Tech outshot Grambling State 19-9. However, GSU placed more shots on goal. The Tigers put five attempts on frame, while La. Tech place four on target.
- The Lady Techsters held a 7-3 advantage on corner kicks.
- Grambling State committed 13 fouls; La. Tech was whistled for nine.
- Madison Covey-Taylor played the full game in goal for GSU, making three saves and allowing one goal.
- The victory was GSU's fifth consecutive win.
