FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. | The Grambling State University women's soccer team fought valiantly, but couldn't overcome No. 2 seed Arkansas, falling 2-0 in in the opening round of the NCAA Division I Women's Soccer Tournament.
GSU (15-5-4) kept the 10
th ranked Razorbacks scoreless through the first half but couldn't keep pace in the second half.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Grambling State and Arkansas traded scoring opportunities throughout the first half, but neither team could break through on the scoreboard. Madison Covey-Taylor shined in the opening period making five saves.
- The Razorbacks scored two quick goals in the early moments of the second half. Bella Field placed a shot in the back of the net in the 52nd minute. 25 seconds later, a goal by Ava Tankersly made it 2-0.
- The Razorbacks tacked on three more goals to close the second half and secure the 5-0 win.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
- Arkansas out shot Grambling State 33-7.
- The Razorbacks held a 13-0 advantage on corner kicks.
- GSU committed 14 fouls. Arkansas was whistled for nine fouls.
- Madison Covey Taylor made a game-high seven saves in 82 minutes of action. Aimee Benton made one save in the final eight minutes of the contest.
