DES MOINES, Iowa | Kintavious Dozier and
Antwan Burnett led the Grambling State men's basketball team, both scoring in double-figures as the Tigers dropped Thursday's contest to Drake 68-56 at Knapp Center.
Dozier led Grambling (2-8) with 16 points, five rebound, one steal and one assist. Burnett, who was making his GSU debut, tacked on 15 points to go along with five rebounds.
Jalen Johnson was strong on the boards for Grambling, pulling down a game-high 11 rebound with six points and two blocks. The Tigers out rebounded the Bulldogs 32-29.
Grambling came out strong, building an early 9-5 lead over the Bulldogs. Drake (10-1) went on an 8-0 run kick started by four-point play by Conor Enright, who was fouled while knocking down a 3-pointer.
Burnett responded with a 3-pointer of his own making it a 13-12 game with 14:27 to go in the half.
Terrence Lewis put GSU back in front, 14-13, converting a Bulldog turnover into a layup.
With Grambling State leading 16-15, Drake kicked into high gear going on a 20-6 run to snag a 35-22 lead with 2:48 play in the half.
The Tigers weren't phased however, closing the first period on an 8-0 run to trail by single digits at the half, 35-30.
The Bulldogs used an 11-2 run out of the locker room to open a 47-34 with 16:44 on the clock. A lay-up by
Jonathan Aku cut the deficit to 11 points, 47-36, on GSU's next trip up the court, but that was as close as the Tigers would get to the Bulldogs in the second half as Drake kept distance between itself and Grambling.
Drake was led by Enright who scored 16 of his 18 points in the first half. He was 6-of-8 from the floor, including 4-of-6 from behind the arc. He also added five rebounds, three steals and one assist.
GSU shot a higher percentage from the field than Drake, connecting on 43.8 percent (21-of-48) of its shots compared to the Bulldogs' 38.2 percent (21-of-55), however, Drake was stronger from 3-point range. The Bulldogs went 10-of-26 from downtown while the Tigers were only able the drain 2-of-15 attempts from deep.
