Grambling State Outlasts Alabama A&M 66-60

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. | The Grambling State University men's basketball team held off a late really by Alabama A&M, defeating the Bulldogs 66-60 in a Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) contest on Monday night at the AAMU Event Center.

Grambling State (15-8 overall, 8-3 SWAC), who never trailed in the contest, was paced offensively with three players scoring in double-figures. Carte'are Gordon tossed in a team-high 16 points with four rebounds, a steal, a black and an assist. Gordon went 4-of-6 from the field and 8-of-9 from the free throw line.

Cameron Christon notched a 12-point, 12-rebound double-double, while Tra'Michael Moton contribute his season-high of 16 points.

The Tigers who entered the contest with the SWAC lowest free throw percentage, made each trip to the line count on Monday, converting 80.6 percent of their attempts (25-of-31). 

GSU got off to a quick start to open the game, sprinting to an 11-0 lead with 16:34 to go in the first half. A layup by Jonathan Aku grew the Tigers' advantage to 20-6 with 9:41 remaining in the half.

Grambling State led 31-18 at halftime. 

Alabama A&M (8-15, 5-6) came out of the break on fire, going on a 9-2 run powered by seven points from Cameron Tucker, trimming GSU's lead to 33-27 at the 16:56 mark. Tucker finished with a game-high 17 points.

Grambling State quickly extended the lead back to double digits, using a 3-pointer from Moton to go up 40-29 with 14:48 remaining.

The Tigers led by double-digits for the majority of the second half until AAMU found momentum late in the period. After chipping away at the GSU's lead, Xavier Brewer knocked down a 3-pointer, cutting Grambling State's lead down to one point, 58-57 with 2:38 to go.

Alabama A&M wasn't able to get any closer than that, as GSU didn't allow the Bulldogs to score another field goal the rest of the way, while converting its free throws down the stretch. 

Grambling state finished the game shooting 36.7 percent from the floor (18-of-49) and 33.3 percent from three-point range (5-of-15). AAMU went 19-of-43 from the field and 4-of-16 from behind the arc.

The Tigers dominated the boards, out-rebounding the Bulldogs 41-24.
