Grambling State Athletics to Honor Former Standout Mary Currie on Saturday

GRAMBLING, La. | The Grambling State University Department of Athletics is set to honor former GSU Women's Basketball star Mary Currie during Saturday's home doubleheader versus Texas Southern, as part of Alumni Weekend. 

During halftime of the men's contest, a banner featuring Currie's iconic No. 14  jersey will be raised into the rafters of the Fredrick C. Hobdy Assembly Center, officially retiring her number.

Currie, who played for the Lady Tigers from 1983-87, etched her name in the record books as the all-time leading scorer in school history. She totaled 2,256 points and grabbed 905 rebounds. During her career, she averaged 20.7 points, 8.3 rebounds and shot 51.9 percent from the field. 

The Dubach, La. Native and Grambing Legends Sports Hall of Famer helped lead the Lady Tigers to three Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) championships, earned multiple All-SWAC honors, won MVP awards, made two ALL-SWAC tournament teams and was named a Black College Sports Information Directors Association First-Team All-American. 

While at Grambling State, she was also a member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. and graduated with a degree in Computer Science where she graduated with a 3.5 GPA. Currie.

Currie passed away in 2000 at the age of 34 following about with Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS).  

GSU will also unveil banners recognizing every championship team in school history. Tip-off for Saturday's doubleheader is set for 2 p.m.
