ITTA BENA, Miss.| The Grambling State University softball team's late inning surge pushed the Tigers past Mississippi Valley State, 10-4, on Wednesday afternoon at the Bettye Giles Softball Field.
After an empty first inning for both teams, GSU (19-8-1, 8-0 SWAC) pushed across a run in top of the second. Tytianna Robinson grounded out to third, scoring Nyah Jones putting the Tigers on the board first. MVSU (0-19, 0-5) responded quickly with a ground ball from MyKaila Fleming bringing Isabella Robinson home to tie the game 1-1.
Kaytlyn Moore followed that up with a run of her own in the top of the third after a wild pitch from Morgan Gutierrez making it a 2-1 game.
The Devilettes tied the game 2-2 in bottom of the fourth.
Grambling State's bats came back to life in the top of the fifth. Sparked by a double from Jayda Williams that scored Moore, GSU put up six more runs to give them a 8-2 lead. Kaytlyn Moore laid down a perfect bunt scoring Anaiyah Fultz and extending their lead 9-2.
A single from Keisha White in the bottom of the fifth and a double from Naomi Drake brought home two Devilettes but MVSU continued to trail 9-4.
The last run of the game came off of a line out to right field by Deija Russell, and scored Ta'mya Johnson from third.
Johnson, who was 3-of-4 with a double and an RBI. Her three hits was a season-high.
Jayda Williams and Nyah Jones also had multi-hit games. Williams went 2-for-4 with double and an RBI, while jones went 2-for-3.
Payton Shells (3-1) tossed a complete game for the Tigers, surrendering four runs on five hits and four walks. She also struck out five batters,

Grambling State is back at home this weekend for a three-game weekend series versus Southwestern Athletic Conference foe, Prairie View A&M beginning Friday. First pitch is set for 3 p.m. at the GSU Softball Complex.
