GRAMBLING, La. | In a battle of Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) Western Division unbeaten teams, the Grambling State University softball team had its eight-game winning streak snapped, falling to Prairie View A&M 3-0 on Sunday morning at the GSU Softball Complex.
The Lady Tigers struggled to get anything going offensively, scattering three hits against PVAMU starter Cailin Massey (4-5).
The biggest hit of the day for Grambling State (19-9-1, 6-1 SWAC) came on a double by India Wells in the bottom of the first inning.
PVAMU (8-15, 7-0) threatened to score in the top of the 5th inning, putting runners on first and third with one away. After a sacrifice bunt to move a runner to second, Gibbs settled down a delivered a swinging strikeout to get the Lady Tigers out of the jam.
In the sixth, the Panthers broke through to take a 1-0 lead. A one-out triple to right field by Aerin Talley got things started for PVAMU. Biviana Figueroa drove her into score with an RBI double. Prairie View A&M stretched the lead to two, scoring on a wild pitch.
The Panthers tacked on one more run in the seventh to make it 3-0.
Wells, Kaytlyn Moore and Deija Russell accounted for all of the offense for the Lady Tigers, with each player notching a hit.
GSU starter Erin Gibbs (6-2) pitched all seven innings, striking out six batters. She allowed three runs on eights hits and two walks.
PVAMU's Massey led the Panthers in the on the mound and at the plate. She paced went 2-for-3 with a pair of singles. She tossed 7.0 innings, striking out 10 batters.
