GSU Completes Sweep of Alcorn State

GRAMBLING, La. | It was another big day for Grambling State Baseball, as the Tigers defeated Alcorn State 14-6 in six innings during a rain shortened game at Wilbert Ellis Field at R.W.E. Jones Park on Sunday afternoon.

Grambling State (9-14 overall, 5-1 SWAC) outhit Alcron State 12-3. Five Tigers put together multi-hit games. Trevor Hatton, Cameron Bufford, Keylon Mack, Keanu Jacobs-Guishard and Terry Burrell III all registered two hits apiece.

Kerry Boykins got the start GSU, exiting the game after pitching two innings. He fanned two batters, allowing one run on two hits. The Tigers' bullpen only gave up one hit, but allowed five runs thanks to eight walks.

Kendrick Bershell (3-0) was the most effective arm out of the pen for Grambling State, giving no runs on a hit and a pair of walks.

Hatton drove in the first run of the game with a triple to right field. After a bases loaded walk made it 4-0, Jacobs-Guishard laced a double back up the gap, plating two more runs, stretching the lead to 4-0. Burrell III immediately followed that with a two-RBI single. The G-Men led 6-0 heading into the second frame.

After scoring a run in the second inning, Alcorn State took advantage of a pair of pitching changes in the third, drawing four walks in a row to plate its second run of the game. The Braves made it 6-4 on back-to-back sacrifice flies.

Grambling State opened the fourth inning with three consecutive hits. Jacobs-Guishard sparked the inning with a double down the left field line. The Tigers followed with back-to-back bunt singles from Burrell and Tiger Borom. Borom's bunt scored Jacobs-Guishard, making it 7-4.

Following a sacrifice bunt by Nasir Frederick, moving runners to second and third, ASU opted to load the bases and intentionally walk Bufford. Mack made the Braves pay for that decision, stroking a two-RBI single to right field, extending GSU's advantage to 9-4.

After a nearly two hour rain delay, both teams returned to the field in the fifth inning.

The Braves scored two runs in the top of the sixth, trimming their deficit to 9-6. Grambling State responded with five runs in the bottom of the inning before inclement weather forced the conclusion of the contest.

ASU starter Jermel Ford (0-2) was roughed up by GSU hitters, surrendering nine runs on nine hits, and three walks, in four innings pitched.
