Grambling State Dominates UAPB in Doubleheader

PINE BLUFF, Ark. | The Grambling State University baseball team cruise to two blowout victories on over Arkansas-Pine Bluff on Saturday afternoon, defeating UAPB 8-2 in the opening game, and finishing the day with a 19-6 win in game two. 

GSU improved to 11-15 overall, 7-1 in SWAC. 

Game 1

In the first game, Grambling State used a ninth inning surge to put the golden Lions away. 

Grambling State jumped out to an early 2-0 lead on a two-RBI single from Cameron Bufford. UAPB (8-18, 1-7) cut the lead to 2-1 in the bottom of the first on sacrifice fly.

Both teams clamped down defensively in the middle innings, with neither side being able to break through. The Golden Lions tied the game 2-2 in on a eighth inning home run from Brandon Simon, his second RBI of the contest.

GSU took full control of the game in the ninth inning, using a three-RBI double from Trevor Hatton to push ahead 5-2. Bufford drove in his third run of the game with a single to left field, bringing Hatton across the plate. 

The Tigers added two more insurance runs on a two-RBI single by Julian Murphy, extending the lead to 8-2. 

Lorenzo Peterson was strong on the mound for GSU, limiting UAPB to one run on three hits in 6.2  innings of work. He also struck out three and issued four walks. Ethan Bates (2-1) picked up the win in relief for the Tigers, working 2.1 innings, also giving up one run on three hits, with two Ks and a walk. 

Hatton and Bufford led GSU at the plate. Hatton went 3-for-5 with a double and three RBI, while Bufford went 2-for-5 with three RBI. 

Murphy went 1-for-2 with two runs driven in. 

Brandon Little started the game for UAPB, striking out 12 batters in 6.0 innings. He gave up two runs on three hits and six walks. Lucas Jaxson (0-2) was charged with the loss after allowing five runs on four hit with three walks. 

Game 2

The second game of the day was all Tigers, as GSU sailed to a run rule 19-6 victory. 

UAPB tied the game 1-1in the bottom of the first inning, but GSU snatched the lead in the second inning and never looked back. GSU grew it's lead to 6-1 in the third.

After the Golden Lions plated two runs in the bottom of the frame, GSU put up another four run inning in the fourth, growing the advantage to 10-3. 

Grambling State put the game completely out of reach with a six run sixth inning. With the bases loaded, Buford smacked bases clearing triple to make it 13-4. Keylon Mack made it 15-4 with a two-run homer to right field. The Tigers led 16-4 at the end of the inning. 

Connor Rudy (4-3) got win, tossing six innings. Rudy surrendered six runs on seven hits, with two strikeouts and four walks. 

GSU outhit UAPB 14-9 with eight Tigers registering hits in the contest.
