GRAMBLING, La. | The Grambling State University softball team took down Mississippi Valley State 8-5, Wednesday afternoon at the GSU Softball Complex.
Mississippi Valley State (2-34) got on the board first and took a quick 1-0 lead in the top of the first with a homer from Kaitlyn Harper.
Grambling State University ( 26-16-1) responded quickly after Jayda Williams plated Kaytlyn Moore and tied the Delta Devils 1-1.
The Tigers picked up their momentum and began to pull away in the bottom of the third. Cadashia Collins sent one through the right field placing her at third and bringing Moore and Asli Strozier home. India Wells drove in a run with a sacrifice fly, scoring Collins. GSU ended the inning leading 4-1.
MVSU only recorded one run in the top of the fourth courtesy of Harper who advanced on to third on a wild pitch and scored. The Tigers continued to lead 4-2.
After the Tigers failed capitalize in the bottom of the fourth, MVSU used the top of the fifth to cut into GSU's lead. Harper scored Kayla Robinson after sending a fly through right field putting MVSU just one point behind the Tigers 4-3.
Grambling State did not let that stop them as Ta'mya Robinson singled to right center and brought Wells home to extend the Tigers lead 5-3.
Robinson added another home run in the top of the sixth and brought home Naomi Draki for the Delta Devils and tied the Tigers 5-5.
The Tigers came back and shut out MVSU in the bottom of the sixth. After stealing second and third, Moore crossed the plate after Wells singled through left field giving GSU a one point 6-5 lead.
Grambling State picked up two more runs from Wells and Collins and pulled away from MVSU 8-5.
Despite the offensive efforts from MVSU, they could not get anything going against the GSU defense as Grambling State secured the win 8-5.
Sherrell Matthews (2-0) got the win on the mound, surrendering five runs on four hits in six innings of work.
Erin Gibbs sealed the deal in the seventh inning, shutting the door on MVSU with a 1-2-3 inning and securing her first save of the year.
