BATON ROUGE, La. | The Grambling State baseball team avenged Friday night's extra innings loss with a 3-2 victory over Southern University on Saturday afternoon at Lee-Hines Stadium.
Connor Rudy (6-4) had a stellar performance on the mound for the Tigers, allowing just two runs on six hits, while delivering five strikeouts and walking two in eight innings.
Julian Murphy and Jose Vargas paced Grambling State (17-20 overall, 12-4 SWAC) both registering two hits with an RBI apiece.
After a scoreless first four innings, Murphy got things cooking in the top of the fifth with a leadoff double down the right field line. Vargas shifted him over to third with a bunt single to third base. Terry Burrell III laid down a perfectly executed sacrifice bunt, scoring Murphy and giving GSU a 1-0 lead.
In the following inning, an RBI double by Keylon Mack extending GSU's advantage to 2-0. After the Tigers loaded the bases, Vargas drew a walk, scoring GSU's third run o the day.
Southern (13-20, 8-6) scored two runs in the seventh, pulling with one run of the Tigers. In the ninth inning, SU had a chance to snatch victory away from the Tigers, loading the bases with one out. Jacorey Boudreaux entered the game, shutting the door on the Jaguars and earning his first save of the year by getting a swimming strikeout and inducing a fly ball to left field, securing the 3-2 win for GSU
