HOUSTON, Texas | The Grambling State University softball team responded in a big way on Saturday afternoon, avenging Friday's losses and easily dismantling Texas Southern for a 7-2 victory at Memorial Park.
GSU (29-20-1 overall, 14-9 SWAC), was never threatened in contest, holding a 7-0 lead through the through the fifth inning.
The Tigers registered seven hits on the afternoon. Jayday Williams went 1-for-3 with a double and two RBI. Cadshia Collins, Lauren Ervin and Aniyah Fultz each drove in a run. Jones had the other extra base hit for GSU, making a double in the fourth inning.
Williams got Grambling State on the board early with a two RBI double in the top of the first, giving the Tigers a 2-0 lead. Ervin drove in GSU's third run with a grounder to shortstop.
In the fourth inning, an error in right field scored GSU fourth run of the game. Fultz pushed across another run on a groundout to shortstop, making it 5-0 Grambling State. Collins legged out a single right back to shortstop, bringing another run across the plate. Kaytlyn Moore stretched the lead to 7-0 on a steal of home plate.
TSU (14-23, 11-12 SWAC) tacked on a pair of runs in the sixth and seventh innings.
Sherrell Matthews (4-2) tossed a complete game, giving up two runs on five hits with a strikeout.
