6/7/2023 2:00:00 PM

GRAMBLING, La. | The Grambling State University's women's basketball program announced the signing of eight talented players to its roster for the upcoming season, on Wednesday. These new signees bring a wealth of experience, skill, and leadership to the team.

This class marks the first full recruiting class by new GSU Women's Basketball Head Coach Courtney Simmons.

"I am blessed to have an opportunity to coach at the Grambling State University and lead these young ladies to becoming champions in life and on the court," said Simmons."This eight person recruiting class all have a redemption story and we are just eager and ready to get to work. Dr. Scott has provided me with the necessary resources that attracts this type of talent and we are here to compete. This is my first class at the helm of the program and I'm proud of the group I've put together. Now the focus shifts to team bonding and skill development. This core group of transfer will play a pivotal role in pushing our lone freshman Arianna Mosley, who came in ahead of schedule. We will wear the G proudly and give our fans something to cheer about."

Jordyn Carter | Guard | 5'9"
Jordyn Carter, from Austin, Texas, joins the Grambling women's basketball program from North Texas. Carter has earned two All-Conference selections and received the Conference Defensive Player of the Year award.  Carter also garnered All-Region honors and was an NJCAA All-American honorable mention during her time at North Texas.

Simmons Sentiments..."Jordyn is a Graduate Transfers that brings experience, the ability to guard baseline to baseline, athleticism, rebound tenacity, and adds great depth to our roster.

Anijah Grant | Center | 6'3"
Anijah Grant, 6'3" center from Tulane University.

Simmons Sentiments..."Anijah hasn't even tapped into her real potential yet. Her 6'3" frame gives us protection in the paint and there's not a rebound she can't track down. I'm excited to be on this journey with her to insure her last year in collegiate athletics is her best year!"

Deivejon Harris | Forward | 6'2"
Deivejon Harris, a Bronx, New York native, joins Grambling State from Sullivan CC. Harris comes with an impressive list of accomplishments, including being named the Region Player of the Year twice and receiving First Team All-Conference recognition. Her outstanding performance on and off the court earned her Academic All-Conference recognition as well. Harris was a finalist for the 2022-2023 Athlete of the Year award and achieved various other honors, such as being part of the All-Tournament Team and earning NJCAA All-Region and All-American distinctions.

Simmons Sentiments..."Dee is a force in the paint with her rebounding efforts and play making skills but has the ability to step out and knock down shots. She's a special talent and a true New Yorker, GRITTY!"

Destinee McDowell | Forward | 6'0"
Destinee McDowell, a Dallas, Texas native, transfers from Trinity Valley CC to join the Grambling women's basketball team. McDowell's outstanding performance earned her recognition as a First Team All-Conference player and the Newcomer of the Year for the 2022-2023 season.

Simmons Sentiments..."DMac can play with her back to the basket or step out and hit a jumper to accompany her rebounding efforts. She is coming off of a NJCAA national tournament loss (to Zayla's NWF team) and that burn in her belly has her motivated to push this team to championship levels. I am thrilled to coach her!"

Brenda McKinney | Guard/Forward | 6'1"
Brenda McKinney, from Washington, D.C., arrives at Grambling State from Chipola College. McKinney's inclusion in the 2022-2023 All-Panhandle First Team All-Conference underscores her talent and commitment to the game. Her experience as a state champion in 2021 will undoubtedly contribute to the Tigers' pursuit of success.

Simmons Sentiments..."Brenda has the talent to be special in this league. Her long athletic frame and her ability to rebound will give us a chance to really battle in the post.

Douthshine Prien | Guard | 5'7"
Douthshine Prien, from Boynton Beach, Florida, transfers from Pensacola State College. Prien's notable achievements include receiving the Carla Williams Award and being named to the Second Team All-Panhandle Conference for the 2021-2022 and 2022-2023 seasons. She was also recognized as the Most Outstanding Player in 2022-2023.

Simmons Sentiments..."DP is a joy to have with an infectious personality. But when it's time to play she is a competitor that pushes everyone around her to be better. Natural leader, rebounder, and I'm expecting a lot out of her."

Zayla Tinner | Guard | 5'10"
Zayla Tinner, from Amarillo, Texas, arrives at Grambling State after playing for NWF State. Tinner was an integral part of the team's success, helping them secure the 2022-2023 national championship. She was recognized as a First Team All-Conference player and made the All-Tourney Nationals team.

Simmons Sentiments..."Zayla brings instant offense, length, rebounding edge, and tons of experience from various levels. An elite talent like her stands to really make some noise in this league and I'm just happy this NJCAA National Champion is on my team."

Kahia Warmsley | Guard | 5'8"
Kahia Warmsley, a standout guard from Shreveport, Louisiana, joins the Tigers after an impressive high school career at Mansfield High School. Averaging 18 points, 6 rebounds, 3 assists, and 1.5 steals per game, Warmsley has established herself as a force to be reckoned with on the court. She received numerous accolades, including the LHSAA Class 3A Player of the Year, and was ranked as the #2 guard in Louisiana in 2020. Additionally, she was a key contributor to Mansfield's 2019 Class 3A Championship victory and was named the 2019 3A Tournament MVP.

Simmons Sentiments..."I can't say enough about the importance of keeping local kids in the state. Kahia will bring an instant fan base, experience, natural leadership skills, rebounding from the perimeter, and this kid has a story to tell through the game of basketball."
