GRAMBLING, La. | Grambling State University Women's Volleyball:
Ana Calderon has been chosen as the Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) preseason Setter of the Year and has been honored with a place on the All-SWAC first team.
A Texas native, Calderon's remarkable achievement shines a light on her impressive sophomore season, during which she showcased exceptional prowess as she led Grambling State's volleyball team in assists. Over the course of the season, Calderon delivered a total of 537 assists, achieving an impressive .347 percentage. Her average of 5.65 assists per set underscores her role as a pivotal player for the team.
Additionally, Calderon ranked within the conference in service aces, amassing a total of 37 while maintaining an average of 0.39 service aces per set.
The GSU Volleyball program had a successful season with an overall record of 15-12 and an impressive 12-4 performance in conference play. The team concluded the season as the third seed heading into the conference tournament under first-year head coach
Paige Phillips.
Florida A&M received Player of the Year (Brooke Lynn Watts) and Libero of the Year (Brooke Hudson), and Talia Gaines from Alabama State received Blocker of the Year.
Alongside Calderon, the All-SWAC First Team includes players from Alabama State, Bethune-Cookman, Florida A&M, Jackson State, and Prairie View A&M.
The Grambling State University volleyball team is set to commence their 2023 season on Friday, August 25th, with an opening match against Southeastern Louisiana University. The match will take place at the Pride Roofing University Center in Hammond, Louisiana, at 12:30 pm.
