TALLAHASSEE, Fla. | Kintavious Dozier tossed in a game-high 23 points as the Grambling State University men's basketball team made easy work of Florida A&M, defeating the Rattlers 65-52 at the Al Lawson Multipurpose Center on Monday evening.
The victory improved GSU to 6-11 overall and 3-1 in the Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC). FAMU fell to 2-12, 0-3 in the SWAC.
For the second time in as many games, Dozier led the Tigers scoring effort by eclipsing the 20-point plateau. The Lannett, Ala. native was 9-for-15 from the floor, including going 3-for-6 from three-point range. He added a pair of assists and steal to his stat line.
Jalen Johnson and
Antwan Burnett were also effective on the offensive end, both scoring 13 points apiece. Burnett and Johnson were also dominant on the boards with Burnett snatching narrowly missing a double-double with nine rebounds and Johnson pulling down eight boards.
The first half was evenly played with both teams trading buckets back and forth. With the score tied 15-15 with under 10 minutes remaining in the half, Grambling State tried to create some breathing room of the scoreboard.
Antwan Burnett splashed a three-pointer to make it 18-15 Tigers. A dunk by
Jonathan Aku extended GSU's lead to 20-15 with 7:28 left in the period.
FAMU did cut GSU's lead down to one point, 22-21, at the 3:50 mark, but Grambling State held on the lead wouldn't trail the Rattlers the rest of the way. The Tigers led 29-23 at halftime.
The second half was where GSU imposed its will upon Florida A&M. After FAMU trimmed Grambling State's lead back down to one at 29-28, the Tigers used an 11-0 run sparked by a Johnson three-pointer to build a 40-28 gap with 15:34 to play.
The G-Men continued to dominate the Rattlers, crafting its largest lead of the game, 55-37, with 8:41 to go.
FAMU wouldn't threaten Grambling State the rest of the way as the Tigers went on to nab the 65-52 triumph. The victory marked GSU's third consecutive win over the Rattlers.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
- Grambling State went 25-of-56 from the floor (44.6 percent) including 8-of-22 (36.4 percent) from behind the arc and 7-of-13 (53.8 percent) from the free throw line.
- Florida A&M connected on 19-of-49 of its field goal attempts (38.8 percent), 5-of-18 from three-point range (27.8 percent) and 9-of-15 from the free throw line (60.0 percent).
- GSU held a 35-30 rebounding advantage.
- GSU scored 30 points in the paint, 11 second chance points, seven fast break points and seven bench points. The Tigers scored 20 points off 12 turnovers.
- FAMU finished with 20 points in the paint, 14 bench points, 11 fast break points and seven second chance points. The Rattlers added 11 points off 10 turnovers.
- Grambling State held the lead for 79.5 percent of the contest (31:47).
