GRAMBLING, La. | The Grambling State University football team suffered a 24-17 loss to Texas Southern on Saturday night at Shell Energy Stadium.
GSU fell to 4-4 overall and 1-3 in Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) play, while TSU improved to 3-4 and 2-2 in the SWAC.
After an early injury to starting quarterback
Myles Crawley on GSU's first drive of the game, Grambling State turned to backups
Ashton Frye and
Deljay Bailey to lead the offense. Bailey went 7-of-12 for 70 yards, adding 35 rushing yards and a touchdown on five carries.
Frye completed his only pass attempt for four yards.
The G-Men relied primarily on its run game to pick up yards, rushing for 154 yards and two scores. Ke'Travion Hargrove led the ground game with 73 yards and a TD on 13 carries.
As a team, Grambling churned out 256 yards of total offense.
Calvin Henderson led the GSU defense with seven total tackles and five solo stops.
After Texas Southern forced a punt from GSU from its own end zone, TSU took a 7-0 lead on a 6-yard run by quarterback Jace Wilson with 14:22 left in the second quarter.
Later in the period, an interception by
Joel Williams set GSU up near midfield at their 49-yard line.
Reed Harradine got Grambling State on the board with a 38-yard field goal, cutting the deficit to 7-3 with 4:02 left in the half.
TSU stretched its lead to 14-3 before halftime when backup QB Jordan Davis connected with Donald McKinney on a 49-yard TD pass with 11 seconds on the clock.
On Grambling State's first drive of the third quarter, with backup QB
Deljay Bailey in the game, the Tigers drove 78 yards on eight plays for their first touchdown of the game. The drive was capped by a 31-yard TD run by Ke'Travion Hargrove to make it a 14-10 game with 10:26 to go in the third quarter.
A 46-yard field goal by Gustavo Romero pushed Texas Southern's advantage to 17-10 with 4:41 to go in the third.
With 9:07 remaining in the fourth quarter, a 6-yard scamper by Bailey toed the game 17-17.
Texas Southern responded on the ensuing drive, taking nearly five minutes off the clock on a 10-yard play, and a 75-yard drive that was punctuated by a 2-yard touchdown run by Quinn Quintell to give TSU a 24-17 lead with 4:24 left.
GSU wasn't able respond on its next drive and Texas Southern escaped with the victory.
TSU gained 366 yards of offense with 189 of those yards coming on the ground.
Wilson was the key to TSU's offense, throwing for 128 yards on 11-of-18 attempts and running for 86 yards and a touchdown on 12 touches. Davis was 1-of-1 for 49 yards and a touchdown.
Javius Williams was Texas Southern's leading tackler with nine total tackles.
