The Grambling State University women’s volleyball team battled Southern University in a five-set thriller

Baton Rouge , La. | The Grambling State University women's volleyball team battled Southern University in a five-set thriller on Monday afternoon at Seymour Gymnasium. Despite the Tigers' efforts, they fell 3-2 in a hard-fought match. Grambling's record now stands at 6-10 overall and 2-2 in SWAC play, while Southern moves to 4-14 overall and 2-2 in conference. 

HOW IT HAPPENED 

The match was a back-and-forth affair from the start. Southern took the first set 25-19, but Grambling responded with a marathon second set, edging Southern 30-28 to level the match. In the third set, Southern regained the lead with a 25-22 win, but the Tigers stormed back in the fourth, taking it 25-19. In the deciding fifth set, both teams traded points, but Southern managed to close it out 15-12 to claim the victory. 

KEY PERFORMERS 

Essence Allen delivered a standout performance for the Tigers with 19 kills and 22 digs, leading both the offense and defense. 

Lauryn Bourne added 5 kills and 13 digs, providing crucial support throughout the match. 

Ra'Niya Brown anchored the defense with 4 digs and key blocks, playing a pivotal role at the net. 

Kai Williams chipped in with timely kills, keeping Grambling competitive during the critical moments. 

INSIDE THE NUMBERS 

• Grambling recorded 54 kills on 184 attacks with a .174 hitting percentage, while Southern registered 67 kills on 206 attacks, hitting at a .170. 

• The Tigers' defense stood out with 90 digs, led by Essence Allen, Dylan Hoskins, and Lauryn Bourne, and they tallied 16 block assists and 11 total team blocks to Southern's 7 blocks. 

• Grambling also had a strong serving game with multiple service aces, keeping pressure on Southern throughout the match.

Grambling State will hit the road to face Arkansas Pine Bluff on October 10th at 6:30 PM.
