HOUSTON, Texas | The Grambling State University baseball team fell to Prairie View A&M 10-5 on the opening day of the Cactus Jack HBCU Baseball Classic on Friday evening at Minute Maid Park.
GSU starting pitcher,
Randy Reyes (0-1), had a strong debut for the Tigers, working 7.0 innings and racking up nine strikeouts while surrendering two runs on four hits and pair of walks.
Most of PVAMU's damage was done in the final two innings when the Panthers exploded for eight runs versus the GSU bullpen.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Trailing 2-0 in the bottom of the second inning, Julian Murphy sparked the GSU offense with a double. Keanu Jacobs-Guishard poked an RBI single up the middle, trimming the down to one.
- After a silent five innings, Murphy reached base on a throwing error by PVAMU third baseman Bush, advancing to second to open the bottom of the seventh. Trey Ware entered to pinch run for Murphy and advanced to third on a failed pickoff attempt.
- Prairie View A&M got out of the jam however, maintaining a 2-1 advantage.
- PVAMU took advantage of a GSU pitching change in the eighth inning, plating three runs to go up 5-1. And RBI single by Trevor Hatton in the bottom of the frame, made it 5-2 Panthers.
- Prairie View A&M tacked on five more runs in the top of the ninth, stretching its lead to 10-2.
- Freshman Martavius Thomas showcased his power in the bottom of the ninth, smacking a three-run homer over the right field wall, cutting the deficit to 10-5, but that would be all the offense that GSU can muster in the final stanza.
