Grambling State Defats Alcorn State 78-67

LORMAN, Miss. | The Grambling State University men's basketball team had four players score in double-figures as the Tigers beat Alcorn State 78-67 at the Davey L. Whitney Complex on Monday night. 
 
Jourdan Smith notched a double-double for GSU (10-12 overall, 7-2 SWAC). The New Orleans, La. native scored 19 points to go along with 12 rebounds. He also added three assists, one block and one steal. 
 
Terrence Lewis put on one of his strongest offensive performances of the year, contributing 18 points on 7-of-8 shooting. He was exceptionally effective from long-range, going 4-of-5 from three-point land. 
 
Kentavious Dozier and Tra'Michael Moton added 15 points apiece. 
 
In the early stages of the game, neither team could pull away from the other. With the score tied 10-10 with 12:18 on the clock, Lewis knocked down a three-pointer to give GSU a 13-10 lead. A few minutes later, with the Tigers in front 15-14, Lewis drained another triple, giving GSU a four-point cushion, 18-14, with 9:45 remaining in the half. 
 
Alcorn State (5-17, 4-5 SWAC) briefly regained the lead, 26-25 with 2:45 left in the period. 
 
As time expired in the first half, a steal led to a buzzer beating layup by Smith, giving GSU a 27-26 lead heading into the locker room. 
 
In the second half, ASU worked its way back in front with a slim 40-39 lead at the 13:41 mark. Gramling State responded by going on a 9-0 run, capped by a three-pointer by Smith, to snag a 48-40 lead with 11:29 to play. 
 
Moton helped Grambling State stretch its lead to 11 points, 56-45, with a three-pointer of his own with 8:31 to go. 
 
GSU would lead by double-digits for much of the remainder of the contest. The Tigera led by as many as 15 points, 73-59, with 2:04 to play. 
 
The closest ASU would get to GSU was with 35 seconds left in the contest when ASU trimmed GSU's lead down to eight points, 75-67. Grambling State scored its final three points at the free throw line to wrap up the 11-point victory. 
 
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
  • Grambling State went 28-of-55 from the floor (50.9 percent) including 9-of-16 (56.3 percent) from behind the arc and 13-of-16 (81.3 percent) from the free throw line. 
  • Alcorn State connected on 29-of-49 of its field goal attempts (49.0 percent), 3-of-13 from three-point range (23.1 percent) and 16-of-19 from the free throw line (84.2 percent).  
  • GSU held a 27-21 rebounding advantage.
  • Grambling State scored 36 points in the paint, 22 bench points, eight fast break points, 16 second chance points and 12 points off eight turnovers. 
  • Alcorn State finished with 32 points in the paint, 11 second chance points, 15 bench points, four fast break points and four points off turnovers.
