GSU Continues Its Winning Ways, Downs Alabama State 74-68

GRAMBLING, La. | The Grambling State University men's basketball team remained atop the Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) standings with a 74-68 win over Alabama State on Saturday afternoon at the Fredrick C. Hobdy Assembly Center on Saturday afternoon.
 
Kintavious Dozier led GSU (11-12 overall, 8-2 SWAC) with 21 points, seven rebounds and two steals. It was the seventh time this season that Dozier has scored at least 20 points. 
 
Grambling State made things tough for the Alabama State (11-12, 6-4) defensively, forcing 17 total turnovers, 10 of which were steals. 
 
Both teams shot right around 38 percent from the field, with ASU shooting a slightly better percentage (38.5 percent). GSU shot 38.3 percent from the floor. However, it was Grambling State's attacking offense that garnered 32 free throw attempts. The Tigers converted 22 of their opportunities from the charity stripe. 
 
Grambling State turned the heat up on the Hornets early in the first half. With ASU leading 7-5 at the 16:12 mark, the Tigers embarked on an 18-2 run sparked by back-to-back three-pointers from Dozier, giving GSU a 23-9 lead with 11:29 remaining in the period.
 
Alabama State continued to fight back, trimming GSU's lead to nine points, 33-24, with 35 seconds left in the half. Tra'Michael Moton splashed a deep three-pointer as time expired, giving GSU a 36-24 advantage heading into halftime. 
 
ASU exited the locker room with energy, using a 13-3 run to cut Grambling State's lead down to two points, 39-37, with 17:05 on the clock. Following a GSU free throw, Isaiah Range drained ASU's third triple of the second half, tying the game 40-40. 
 
TJ Madlock briefly pushed the Hornets in front, 41-40, after splitting a pair of free throws at the 15:35 mark.  Madlock led ASU with a game-high 22 points with four rebounds and an assist. 
 
On Grambling State's next trip up the court, Moton got to the charity stripe and knocked down two free throws that started a 12-2 run for the Tigers, giving GSU a 52-43 lead with 11:18 to go. 
 
Grambling State kept distance between itself and Alabama State the rest of the way, easily disposing of the Hornets and adding another conference win to its tally. 
 
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
  • Grambling State went 23-of-60 from the floor (38.3 percent) including 6-of-17 (35.3 percent) from behind the arc and 22-of-32 (68.8 percent) from the free throw line. 
  • Tra'Michael Moton scored 13 points with six rebounds, four steals, two assists and one block.
  • Jalen Johnson added 12 points, seven boards and a block. 
  • Jourdan Smith contributed 11 points, six rebounds, two blocks, one assist and one steal. 
  • Alabama State connected on 25-of-65 of its field goal attempts (38.5 percent), 6-of-25 from three-point range (24.0 percent) and 12-of-17 from the free throw line (70.6 percent).  
  • ASU held a 45-38 rebounding advantage.
  • Grambling State scored 32 points in the paint, 22 bench points, 10 fast break points, 10 second chance points and 16 points off 17 turnovers. 
  • Alabama State finished with 34 points in the paint, 20 second chance points, 20 bench points, 16 fast break points and 10 points off eight turnovers.
