Big Second Half Guides GSU Past Alcorn State

Lorman, Miss. | The Grambling State University women's basketball team gained a 72-55 victory over Alcorn State Monday night at the Davey L. Whitney Complex. 
 
Grambling State (12-8 overall, 6-3 SWAC) led by as much as 17 and forced Alcorn State (4-16 overall, 2-7 SWAC) to commit 22 turnovers. The Lady Tigers would capitalize scoring 25 points off those turnovers. 
 
The story of the game for the Lady Tigers was their dominant third quarter. Grambling shot 9-of-15 (60 percent) from the field and outrebounded Alcorn 8-4 in third. Also shooting a perfect 6-of-6 from the free throw line. 
 
The Lady Tigers had 11 players score with Jazmyne Jackson leading the way with 15 points. Zayla Tinner pitched in 13 points and 5 rebounds to help secure victory. Destiny Brown of Alcorn was the game's leading scorer with 16 points and 12 rebounds. 
 
The game would be tied 25-25 heading into the half. Grambling would outscore Alcorn by 15 points in the third quarter and would not give up the lead again.

  • Grambling State shot 23-of-58 (39.7 percent) from the field, 5-of-15 (33.3 percent) from deep, and 21-of-27 (77.8 percent) from the free throw line.  
  • Alcorn made 21 of their 54 shots (38.9 percent), including 5-of-15 (33.3 percent) from long range, and 8-of-13 (61.5 percent) from the free throw line. 
  • The Lady Tigers scored 29 bench points, 24 points in the paint, and 25 points off turnovers.
