Smith and Burnett Score 18 Points apiece, Guides GSU Past FAMU

GRAMBLING, La. | The Grambling State University men's basketball team defeated Florida A&M 75-68 in the Frederick C. Hobdy Assembly Center Saturday night to remain first in the Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) standings. 
 
In a back and forth first half, Grambling State (15-13 overall, 12-3 SWAC) was able to gain control and take a 10-point lead, 42-32, into the halftime break. Antwan Burnett and Tra'Michael Moton led the way with 10 points each in the first half. 
 
The Tigers had a dominant presence in the paint in the first half scoring 26 of their 42 points in the paint. The Tigers also got to the free throw line on multiple occasions going 4-of-6 from the line in the first half. 
 
GSU looked to expand their double-digit lead in the second half, however the Rattlers would not go away. A turnaround jump shot late into the shot clock by Kintavious Dozier would expand the lead to six. 
 
Jourdan Smith and Burnett led the way for Grambling notching 18 points apiece. Burnett played a complete game grabbing 10 rebounds to secure the double-double and pitched in 5 assists. 
 
Grambling State's offensive attack lost a step in the second half, going 0-of-6 from deep. However, they maintained control through the shooting struggles and cruised to victory.  
 
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
  • Grambling State shot 30-of-55 (54.5 percent) from the field, 4-of-15 (26.7 percent) from deep, and 11-of-17 (64.7 percent) from the free throw line.
  • FAMU shot 26-of-58 (44.8 percent) from the field, 3-of-11 (27.3 percent) from beyond the arc, and 13-of-19 (68.4 percent) from the free throw line. 
  • Both teams combined to go 7-of-26 on three-point attempts. 
  • GSU scored 40 points in the paint, 17 points off turnovers, and 15 bench points. 
  • FAMU scored 34 bench points, 16 points off turnovers, and 7 fast break points.
