LAFAYETTE, La. | The Grambling State University baseball team got off to a strong start versus the University of Louisiana, but lost momentum, falling to the Ragin' Cajuns 12-4 on Tuesday night at M.L. "Tigue" Moore Field at Russo Park.
GSU (8-14) jumped out to a quick 4-0 lead over UL (17-8) but surrendered 12 unanswered runs in the loss.
Carlos Peguero (1-5) got the start on the mound for Grambling State, allowing five runs and striking out three in 4.0 innings of work.
Kyle Walker led the Tigers at the plate, going 2-for-3.
Ashton Inman drove in a pair of runs while going 1-for-3.
UL had three batters notch multi-hit games, with Luke Yahasz leading way going 3-for-4 with two RBI.
Blake McGehee was the starting pitcher for the Ragin' Cajuns, giving up four runs on three hits with a strikeout in 4.0 innings. Steven Cash (2-0) earned the win in relief, going 1.0 innings and allowing one hit and fanning one batter.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Grambling State put pressure on Louisiana early, quickly loading the bases with no outs, bringing Ashton Inman to the plate in the cleanup spot. Inman shot a 2-RBI single into left field to give the Tigers an early 2-0 lead.
- Julian Murphy made it a 3-0 game after reaching base on a fielder's choice and bringing Kyle Walker around the score. A throwing error on the same play, allowed Inman to score, giving GSU a 4-0 cushion.
- Louisiana began to chip away at Grambling State's lead plating a pair of runs in the bottom of the first and added another in the third inning, trimming the Tigers' advantage to 4-3.
- The Ragin' Cajuns took the lead in the bottom of the fourth with another two-run inning, going up 5-4.
- Louisiana dominated the rest of the game, as the Tigers fell 12-4.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
- Grambling State finished with four runs on five hits, committing two errors and leaving five runners on base.
- Louisiana recorded 12 runs on 14 hits. They committed one error and left six runners stranded.
- Four pitchers made relief appearance for the Tigers. Jeremiah Neewman (0.1 IP), Brett Washington (0.2 IP), Charles Jackson (2.0 IP) and Miguel Baez (1.0 IP)
