Grambling State Bats Strong in Series Opening Win over Texas Southern

HOUSTON, Texas | Ashton Inman and Kyle Walker both homered as Grambling State remained unbeaten in the Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) defeating Texas Southern 13-5 on Thursday afternoon at MacGregor Park.

GSU improved to 9-14 overall and 6-0 in the SWAC, while TSU dropped to 7-16 and 3-2 in the conference.

Grambling State registered 12 hits on the afternoon. Inman showcased his prowess at the plate, going 3-for-6 with a three-run homer. Walker went 1-for-6, but his lone hit was a loud two-run homer. Tiger Borom also had a big day for GSU going 3-for-6 with a double a four RBI.

Mason Martinez (5-2) picked up the win on the mound, working 6.0 innings and allowing four runs on eight hits. He also struck out five batters.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Trailing 1-0 in the top of the third, Inman got GSU on the board with a his three-run homer.
  • In the bottom of the frame, Texas Southern added two runs to square the game up at 3-3.
  • Grambling State broke the game open in the sixth inning, putting six runs across the plate. After GSU put runners on first and second with one out, TSU went to the bullpen to replace Domenic Martinez with Joseph Villarrea. Villarrea immediately walked Chris Marcellus to load the basses. Following a strikeout, Borom ripped a two-out, three-RBI double that cleared the bases and gave GSU a 6-3 cushion.
  • The scoring wasn't done, however. Following a walk issued to Cameron Bufford, Borom scored GSU's seventh run on failed pickoff attempts and an error charged to the pitcher. Walker made TSU pay for that mistake, smacking a two-run homer to give Grambling State a 9-3 cushion.
  • Texas Southern's Jaden Jones hit a solo home run in the bottom of the inning, cutting GSU's lead to 9-4.
  • An RBI triple from Julian Murphy in the top of the seventh, push Grambling's advantage back to six runs, 10-4. Jose Vargas brought Murphy into the score from third base on a groundout to second.
  • After Texas Southern made another defensive miscue to put the speedy Terry Burrell on base, Borom laced an RBI-single that scored Burrell from first base and stretched Grambling State's lead to 12-4.
  • GSU tacked on its final run of the game in the top of the eighth.
