GSU Smacks Four Homers in 13-3 Win over Texas Southern

HOUSTON, Texas | The Grambling State University baseball team put on a power display in Friday afternoon's 13-3 win over Texas Southern at MacGregor Park. GSU hit four home runs, two off the bat of Julian Murphy, in the seven-inning rout. 
 
Murphy, Cameron Bufford and Kyle Jones flexed their muscle accounting for GSU's homers. Murphy went 3-for-4 with two homers, a triple and four RBI. Bufford was 4-for-4 with a homer a four RBI while Walker went 2-for-3 a home run and two RBI. 
 
Carlos Peguero (2-5) earned the win out of the bullpen for Grambling State. He pitched 2.1 innings, surrendering two runs on one hit. He struck out two batters and issue four walks. 
 
The victory improved GSU to 10-14 overall and 7-0 in the SWAC. Texas Southern fell to 7-17, 2-3 in the SWAC. Grambling State's 7-0 conference record marks its best start since 2021 when GSU opened SWAC play 8-0. 
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Trailing 1-0 in the top of the second, Murphy gave GSU a spark by smacking a solo homer to left field. 
  • Grambling State's Jaylyn Bennet ripped an RBI-single to give GSU a 2-1 lead in the top of third. Later in the inning, Murphy walloped his second long ball of the game, this time it was a two-run shot make it a 4-1 game. 
  • Texas Southern got two runs back in the bottom of the third with a two-run homer by Nin Burns II cutting GSU's lead to 4-3. 
  • In the top of the fourth, Cameron Bufford scorched an RBI-single through the left side of the infield, pushing GSU's advantage to 5-3
  • In his next at-bat in the sixth inning, Bufford launched a two-run homer high over the left field wall, stretching Grambling State's lead to 7-3. A couple of batters later, Jaylyn Bennett hit another RBI-single, giving GSU an 8-3 lead. With runners on second and third, Julian Murphy cleared the bases with a two-RBI triple smoked into right field. Grambling State led 10-3 heading into the bottom of the frame. 
  • Bufford drove in his fourth RBI of the game in the seventh inning on a single that scored Martavius Thomas. Kyle Walker put the mercy rule in play with a two-run homer, growing GSU's lead to 13-3.
  • Texas Southern failed to score in the bottom of the inning, securing the run-rule win for Grambling State. 
  INSIDE THE NUMBERS
  • Grambling State finished with 13 runs on 13 hits. GSU left eight runners on base and committed four errors.
  • Texas Southern recorded three runs on five hits. They committed two errors and left 12 runners stranded.
  • Randy Reyes started the game for GSU, pitching 0.2 innings and allowing one run on two hits. Courtlan Posey worked 4.0 innings on the mound, fanning five batters and allowing just two hits. 
  • Dalton Alford (3-7) was charged with the loss after giving up seven runs on seven hits in 5.2 innings of work. He struck out six and walked four.  
  • Grambling State has now scored at least 10 runs in five of its seven conference games.

Grambling State wraps up its series with Texas Southern on Saturday. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m.  at MacGregor Park.
