HOUSTON, Texas | The Grambling State University baseball team led by as many as six runs, but couldn't withstand a late Texas Southern rally, falling 15-13 at MacGregor Park on Saturday afternoon.
In a game that Grambling State (10-15 overall, 7-1 SWAC) was in control of for much of the afternoon, Texas Southern (8-17, 3-3) used a seven-run eighth inning to sprint to the win.
It was a game that saw both offenses put up big numbers. Grambling State registered 16 hits, while Texas Southern notched 15 hits in the game.
Charles Jackson was tagged with the loss out of the bullpen for GSU after allowing five runs on three hits after entering to pitch in the eighth.
Tiger Borom led GSU at the plate going 3-for-6 with home run, double and three RBI.
Cameron Bufford also racked up three hits, going 3-for-5 with an RBI.
Ashton Inman continued to a reliable bat for Grambling State, driving in team-high four runs while going 2-for-4 with a home run.
Jose Vargas had a multi-RBI game, driving in three runs and going 2-for-4.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Grambling State got to work early, building a 3-0 lead in the top of the first. Ashton Inman and Julian Murphy drew bases loaded walks to plate GSU's first two runs. Chris Marcellus drove in the third run with a sacrifice fly to right field.
- Cameron Bufford added to Grambling State's lead in the second inning with a RBI-single, giving GSU a 4-0 lead. After Grambling State pushed its lead to 5-1 in the top of the third inning, Texas Southern roared back with six runs in the bottom of the frame to take a 7-5 lead.
- Grambling State had another big inning in the fourth, plating seven runs. Inman cracked a three-run homer to put GSU back in front 8-7. Later in the inning, after Grambling State made it a 9-7 game, Tiger Borom clobbered a three-run home run to give GSU a 12-7 cushion.
- Jose Vargas hit an RBI-single in the fifth inning, growing GSU's advantage to 13-7.
- However, Texas Southern scored eight unanswered runs over the next three innings, including seven runs in the eighth inning to take a 15-13 lead that they wouldn't relinquish.
- INSIDE THE NUMBERS
- Grambling State finished with 13 runs on 16 hits. GSU left nine runners on base and committed one error.
- Texas Southern recorded 15 runs on 15 hits. They committed one error and left eight runners stranded.
- TSU was led offensively by CJ Castillo who went 3-for-3 with a double, a home run and five RBI.
- Grambling State has now scored at least 10 runs in six of its eight conference games.
- Dade Hensley was the winning pitcher. He surrendered one hit and struck out three batters in 2.0 innings.
