Tigers Drops Midweek Bout to Northwestern State

GRAMBLING, La. | The Grambling State baseball team suffered a 4-1 loss to Northwestern State on Tuesday night at Wilbert Ellis Field at R.W.E. Jones.

GSU (10-16 overall, 7-1 SWAC) outhit NSU (10-19, 3-3 Southland) 6-3 in the ballgame, but couldn't push across runs in key moments, including a bases loaded situation with no outs in the sixth inning.

Kyle Walker, Demarckus Smiley and Martiavius Thomas were the only members of the GSU batting order to register hits, with each player notching two hits apiece. Thomas picked up the only extra base hit for the Tigers with a double in the third inning.

Carlos Peguero (1-6) was charged with the loss after giving up four runs on two hits in 4.0 innings pitched. He struck out two batters and walked four.

Jermeiah Newman, Esteban Tavarez and Brett Washington held the Demons scoreless on one hit over the final five innings out of the bullpen. They also combined for six strikeouts.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Northwestern State grabbed a 1-0 lead in the top of the first when Reese Lipoma crossed home plate on a passed ball.
  • After Peguero served up back-to-back hitless innings, NSU stretched its lead to 4-0 in the fourth inning on a three-run homer by Clay Jung.
  • In the bottom of the sixth, Martavius Thomas picked up his second base hit of the game with a leadoff knock. Tiger Borom drew a walk in the next at-bat to put runners on first and second with no outs and force a NSU pitcher Kevin Robinson out of the game. After a passed ball moved the runners over, Bufford drew a walk to load the bases. GSU failed to capitalize on the opportunity, exiting the inning with no runs scored.
  • The Tigers scored its lone run of the game in the eighth inning on a sacrifice fly by Ashton Inman
