GSU Falls to UAPB in Series Opener

PINE BLUFF, Ark.  |The Grambling State University softball team fell to Arkansas-Pine Bluff 4-1 at Torii Hunter Softball Complex on Friday afternoon. 
 
The Lady Tigers scattered four hits over seven innings in the loss. 
 
Dacia Richard (4-5) got the start for the GSU (10-19 overall, 2-7 SWAC). She struck out nine batters in 6.0 innings of work. She surrendered four runs, one earned, on seven hits. 
 
UAPB's Kayla Adams (9-4) picked up the win. She struck out 16 batters in 7.0 innings. She gave up one run on four hits. 
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Arkansas-Pine Bluff (12-13, 4-2) got things cooking early on an RBI single by Amari Broughton in the top of the first. The Golden Lions made it 2-0 on an RBI-single Kaitlyn Neely.
  • With two outs in the bottom of the second, a throwing by Grambling State third baseman Z'Natria Evans allowed two more runs to cross the plate.
  • GSU tried to rally in the sixth inning, loading the bases with one out following a leadoff double by Kamryn Brossard, a bunt single that shifted Broussard the third base and another bunt single by Ta'Mya Johnson following a strikeout of Tavia Leadon
  • The Lady Tigers plated their lone run when Sherrell Matthews was hit by a pitch, scoring Broassard. UAPB's Adams struck out the final two batters of the inning the end the threat.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
  • Grambling State scored one run on four hits. The Lady Tigers left six runners on base.
  • Arkansas-Pine Bluff scored four runs on seven hits. The Golden Lions left five runners stranded.
  • Kamryn Broussard went 1-for-4 with a double.
  • Katelynn Walls was 1-for-1.
  • Ta'Mya Johnson went 1-for-3. 
  • Peighton Krushall was 1-for-3. 
  • UPAB was led by Tyrah Elerby who was 2-for-2. Amari Borughton went 1-for-3 with three RBI. 
 
UP NEXT 
Grambling State continues its series with UAPB in a doubleheader on Saturday. Game one is slated for a 1 p.m. start at the Torii Hunter Softball Complex.
