THIBODAUX, La. | The Grambling State University baseball team dropped both ends of a doubleheader at Nicholls State on Saturday afternoon.
GSU (2-11) dropped game one 13-2 and fell in a game two 24-12.
Game 1
- With Nicholls State on top 4-0 in the top of the third, Tiger Borom tried to ignite a spark underneath GSU with a two-run homer to left field.
- However, The Colonels outscored the Tigers 9-0 the rest of the way to claim a 13-2 win in the opening game.
- Randy Reyes (0-1) got the start for the GSU, pitching five innings and allowing six runs on seven hits. He also struck out six batters.
- Jacob Mayers (2-0) got the win for NSU, surrendering two runs on one hit in five innings of work. He fanned seven batters and walked five.
- GSU scored two runs on five hits. The Tigers committed one error.
- Nicholls scored 13 runs on 13 hits,
Game 2
- Grambling State began the nightcap on a strong note, jumping out to a sizable lead early in the game.
- GSU's first two runs came in the first inning courtesy of back-to-back bases loaded walks. Chris Marcellus made it a 4-0 with a two-RBI single.
- After Nicholls got a pair of runs back in the second inning, Borom's two RBI double in the third inning made a 6-2 game in favor of the Tigers.
- Leading 6-3 in the fourth inning, Grambling State's Trevor Hatton drove in another run on an RBI single.
- The tide of the game would switch completely to NSU after that. The Colonels scored seven runs in the bottom of the fourth to go on top 10-7. They followed that with a 12-run fifth inning, growing their lead to 22-7.
- Trailing 24-7 in the top of the seventh, GSU refused to give up, plating five runs. However, it wasn't enough to avoid the mercy-rule as the Tigers fell 24-12.
- Mason Martinez (2-1) had a tough day on the mound, giving up 10 runs on 10 hits in four innings. He struck out three batters.
- Gavin Galy (1-0) got the win for NSU in a relief appearance, pitching three innings and giving up one run on three hits with two Ks.
- GSU scored 12 runs on 13 hits. The Tigers committed two errors.
- Cameron Bufford led the Tigers at the plate, going 3-for-4 with an RBI.
- Nicholls scored 24 runs on 17 hits. The Colonels committed two errors.
