GSU Outlasts PVAMU in 13 Innings

GRAMBLING, La. | The weekend baseball series between Grambling State and Prairie View A&M got off to a dramatic start with GSU claiming a 3-2 win in 13 innings at Wilbert Ellis Field at R.W.E. Jones Park on Friday night. 
 
Trey Burrell's walk-off RBI single gave Grambling State (20-23 overall, 17-6 SWAC) just enough juice the squeeze past PVAMU (24-24, 13-9). 
 
The Tigers also got solid performances on the mound from starting pitcher Mason Martinez and reliever Javier Martinez. Mason Martinez worked 8.0 innings, giving up two runs on five hits. He also fanned three batters. 
 
Javier Martinez (2-1) was dominant out of the bullpen, striking out nine batters in 5.0 innings in route to the win. He surrendered no runs and allowed just three hits. 
 
HOW IT HAPPENED- Game 1
  • With Tigers trailing 2-0 in the bottom of the second inning. Julian got things started with a leadoff single into centerfield. Grambling State scored its first run of the game when Trevor Hatton laid down a bunt and beat out an errant throw that sailed into foul territory down the right field line, allowing Murphy to score from first. 
  • GSU tied the game 2-2 in the bottom of the fifth when Kyle Walker laced an RBI single through the left side of the infield.
  • Neither team was able to break through until the bottom of the 13th inning when Hatton ripped a leadoff triple into the right field corner. Two batters later, Trey Burrell scored a walk off line drive single into left field to plate the winning run. 
 
 INSIDE THE NUMBERS
  • Grambling State scored three runs on 14 hits. The Tigers left 13 runners on base. 
  • Tiger Borom went 2-for-4 with a double.
  • Kyle Walker was 2-for-6 with an RBI. 
  • Juliana Murphy went 2-for-5. 
  • Trevor Hatton went 2-for-6 with a triple. 
  • Trey Burrell went 1-for-1 with an RBI. 
  • Prairie View A&M scored two runs on eight hits. The Panthers stranded 11 runners. 
  • Michael Burroughs led PVAMU at the plate going 2-for-5.
  • Elijah Breeden (2-2) was charged with the loss for Prairie View A&M after giving up one run on eight hits with seven Ks.

Grambling State continues its series versus Prairie View A&M on Saturday afternoon at Wilbert Ellis Field. First pitch is scheduled for 3 p.m.
