ATLANTA, Ga. | The Grambling State University baseball team advanced to the Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) Championship with a hard-fought 14-11 win over SWAC Eastern Division No. 1 seed and defending conference champion Florida A&M on Saturday afternoon at Russ-Chandler Stadium.
It was
Cameron Bufford's ninth inning three-run home run that secured GSU's first trip to the SWAC title game since 2018. Bufford went 3-for-6 with five RBI, a double and a home run. His late homer was reminiscent of Friday's home run that also capped a late comeback for the Tigers over Alabama State.
As a team, GSU scored 14 runs on 18 hits with six Tigers registering multi-hit games.
Grambling State (25-26) had to use a bevy of arms to get past FAMU's offense, which was just as dangerous as GSU's on Saturday. It was
Phillip Bryant (5-3) who earned the win out of the bullpen. He allowed just one hit and gave up no runs in 2.0 innings of work, with one strikeout.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Grambling State got things going early with Tiger Borom hitting a leadoff double and Kyle Walker getting hit by a pitch to put runners on first and second with Cameron Bufford due up. Bufford laced an RBI single into centerfield giving GSU a 1-0 lead.
- Ashton Inman made it 2-0 with a one-out RBI single. Trevor Hatton drove in the third run of the game after legging out a single and bringing Bufford home. The Tigers held a 3-0 lead heading into the bottom of the first.
- After the Rattlers tied the game 3-3 in the bottom of the frame, Bufford came through with his second RBI base knock, putting the Tigers back in front 4-3 in the second inning.
- The Tigers continued to build on its lead in the third inning. Borom's ground-rule double to left centerfield grew the Tigers' advantage to 6-3. Later in the inning, Walker smacked a 2-run homer, his 11th of the year, extending the lead to 8-3.
- FAMU erased Grambling State lead over the next two innings, tying the contest 8-8 in the fourth inning.
- GSU regained the lead in the top of the seventh, 9-8.
- The Rattlers catapulted themselves back in front on an RBI triple by Janmikell Bastardo. An errant throw to third base allowed Bastardo to cross home plate and give FAMU a 10-9 lead. A solo homer by Sebastian Greico made it 11-9.
- Not to be outdone, Jose Vargas smoked a 2-RBI double off the right centerfield wall, knotting the game up 11-11.
- Bufford delivered a dagger to the defending SWAC Champs, smacking a 3-run homer high over the right centerfield wall, giving GSU a 14-11 lead in the top of the ninth. It was his third home run of the tournament and ninth of the season.
- Phillip Bryant shut the door on the Rattlers in the bottom of the inning, sending the Tigers to the SWAC Title Game.
