BATON ROUGE, La. | The Grambling state University men's basketball team suffered a 67-60 setback to Southern on Saturday night at the F.G. Clark Activity Center.
With the scored tied 60-60 with 0.8 seconds on the clock, a late foul sent Southern to line for game-winning free throws. A slew of technical fouls called on GSU allowed the Jaguars to attempt eight total free throws with under a second left in the game.
As a team, Grambling State (4-14 overall, 1-4 SWAC) shot 38.8 percent from the field, going 19-of-49. The Tigers were 4-of-15 from behind the arc.
Antwan Burnett paced GSU with a 15-point, 14 rebound double-double. He also registered two steals.
The Tigers got off to a fast start, opening an 11-4 lead with 12:43 on the clock.
Southern (10-8, 5-0 SWAC) eventually got its offense going and taking its first of the game, 17-15, on a 3-pointer by Cam Amboree to go in the first half.
The opening period stayed close the rest of the way with the Tigers trailing 31-27 at the break.
Southern used a 10-3 run to open the second half to take its largest lead of the contest 41-30 with 14:44 to play.
PJ Eason halted the run with a layup at the 13:35 mark, GSU first field goal of the second half. The Tigers eventually cut SU's lead to 44-41 courtesy of a bucket inside the paint by Burnett.
With 2:38 remaining in the contest, and the Jaguars holding a 58-50 lead,
Chilaydrien Newton sunk a driving layup and drew a foul to head to the charity stripe. Newton converted the free throw to make it 58-53.
Eason's dunk after a steal by Mikale Stvevenson made it a 58-55 game. Eason followed that with a pair of free throws to pull the Tigers with a point.
DaMariee Jones' layup pushed SU's advantaged to 60-57 with 1:08 on the clock.
Stevenson knocked down a game-tying three with 13 seconds remaining in the game, but a foul on the SU's next possession put the Jaguars at the line to salt the game away. A trio of technical fouls assessed to the Tigers allowed SU to attempt eight total shots at the charity stripe.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
- Grambling State shot 38.8 percent from the field (19-of-469) and 26.7 percent (4-of-15) from three-point range. GSU was 18-of-21 at the free throw line (85.7 percent).
- Kintavious Dozier also scored in double-figure, posting 13 points with three rebounds and three assists.
- GSU grabbed 31 rebounds.
- The Tigers committed 16 turnovers.
- Grambling State scored 22 points in the paint, 7 points off turnovers, 16 bench points, nine second chance points and five fastbreak points.
- Southern shot 43.6 percent from the floor (24-of-55) and 27.8 percent from behind the arc (5-of-18). SU was 14-of-22 at the charity stripe (63.6 percent)
- The Jaguars pulled down 33 rebounds.
- Southern committed 15 turnovers.
- SU scored 38 points in the paint, 36 bench points, 13 points off turnovers, 13 second chance points and seven fastbreak points.
- Southern was led by DeMariee Jones who scored a game-high 15 points with nine rebounds, a steal and a block.
