Grambling State Cruises to 91-47 Win over Huston-Tillotson in Season Opener

GRAMBLING, La. | The Grambling State University men's basketball team started the 2025-26 season on a high note, defeating Huston-Tillotson 91-47 on Monday night on Wills Reed Court at the Fredrick C. Hobdy Assembly Center.
 
The victory was also the first for new head coach Patrick Crarey II, who made his debut leading the Tigers. 
 
GSU (1-0) had five players score in double-figures. Jimel Lane led the way with 15 points on 6-of-12 shooting with three rebounds, three steals and two assists. 
 
Freshman Antonio Munoz added 12 points, while Roderick Coffee III, Jamil Muttilib and Rickey Ballard scored 10 points apiece. 
 
Devyn Franklin was strong on the glass, snagging a game-high 14 rebounds and scoring six points. 
 
The Tigers were smothering on the defensive end, forcing 25 turnovers with 18 coming via steals. GSU also blocked 10 shots. 
 
With Grambling State leading 9-7 with 15:10 remaining in the first half, Muttilib stroked a 3-pointer to spark a quick 8-2 run and extend the lead to 20-9. GSU continued to build on that advantage the rest of the half. Coffee's layup with 15 seconds to go made it a 41-21 game going into halftime. 
 
A Rickey Ballard three gave the Tigers a 31-point cushion, 64-33, with a 10:56 left in the game. 
 
HTU never got any closer as GSU cruised away with the win. 
 
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
  • Grambling State shot 46.3 percent from the field (31-of-67) and 21.7 percent (5-of-23) from three-point range. GSU was 24-of-32 at the free throw line (75.0 percent). 
  • Grambling State grabbed 49 rebounds.
  • GSU committed 15 turnovers. 
  • The Tigers scored 52 points in the paint, 39 bench points, 30 fastbreak points, 18 points off turnovers and nine second chance points.
  • Huston-Tillotson shot 30.9 percent from the floor (17-of-55) and 25.0 percent from behind the arc (5-of-20). HTU was 8-of-19 at the charity stripe (42.1 percent) 
  • The Rams pulled down 34 rebounds.
  • Huston-Tillotson committed 25 turnovers.
  • HTU finished with 20 points in the paint, 19 points off turnovers, 18 bench points, 12 fastbreak points and nine second chance points.
  • James Harrison led HTU with 11 points with five rebounds and one assist.

Grambling State travels to Ames, Iowa to face 16th ranked Iowa State on Thursday, Nov. 6. Tip-off is set for 7 p.m. on ESPN+.
