DALLAS, Texas | Grambling State opened its 2025–26 season on the road Monday morning, falling 96–70 to SMU at Moody Coliseum.
The Tigers trailed early and were unable to recover from a slow offensive start, as SMU used hot shooting across all four quarters to control momentum from start to finish.
Grambling State dropped to 0-1 on the season with the loss, while SMU improved to 1-0.
Zaria Johnson led Grambling State with 16 points, seven rebounds, three steals, and two blocks.
Alieghya Bartholomew provided an offensive spark off the bench, finishing with 15 points on 4-of-8 shooting from beyond the arc.
Monica Marsh added 13 points and
Shaniah Nunn grabbed a game-high 10 rebounds.
SMU shot 50 percent from the field and 43.5 percent from deep, while Grambling State worked to battle back in the second half.
After scoring just 22 points through the opening two quarters, the Tigers posted 19 in the third and 29 in the final frame.
SMU maintained double-digit separation throughout, capitalizing in transition and converting 28-of-37 attempts at the free-throw line.
Grambling State finished with 42 rebounds and 10 steals, scoring 18 points off SMU turnovers.
