VERO BEACH, Fla. | The Grambling State University baseball team defeated Alabama A&M 7-4 on day two of the Andre Dawson Classic on Saturday morning at the Jackie Robinson Training Complex.
GSU (3-3) scored seven runs on eight hits in the victory, with
Martavius Thomas and
Chris Marcellus leading the way with two hits apiece.
Ethan Bates (2-0) earned the win in a relief appearance, holing the Bulldogs scoreless in 3.0 innings of work. He struck out two batters.
Javier Martinez picked up his first save of the season with a flawless ninth inning.
Mason Martinez got the start for the Tigers. He surrendered four runs on eight hits with three Ks and four walks in 5.0 innings.
Grambling State found itself trailing 4-3 after five innings but scored four unanswered runs to grab the win. With the score tied 4-4 in the seventh, Trey Burrell came up with a 1-out pinch hit double. He scored the go ahead run after stealing third and advancing home on an errant throw.
A two-run eighth inning gave GSU all the cushion it needed to stay ahead of AAMU.
