HOUSTON, Texas | The Grambling State University baseball team had a rough outing in its series opener at the University of Houston, falling 17-5 on Friday Night at Don Sanders Field at Darryl and Lori Schroeder Park.
Chris Marcellus paced the Tigers at the plate going 2-for-3 with an RBI.
Trey Bridges led GSU in RBI with two runs driven in while going 1-for-5. As a team, GSU scored five runs on seven hits.
Randy Reyes (0-2) got the start on the mound for Grambling State (4-8) and surrendered nine runs on four hits. He walked six and struck out two.
Aries Gardner drove in the Tigers' first run of the game with an RBI-double hit to the tight centerfield wall. Grambling State was down 16-1 before the next runs came home on a two-RBI single by Bridges in the seventh. GSU added two more runs in the eighth.
Houston did most of its damage via the long ball with four total home runs including two grand slams and a three-run shot. Cade Climie hit a grand slam in the first inning and followed that with a solo homer in the sixth.
Paul Schmitz (3-1) picked up the win for Houston after pitching 5.0 innings and allowing one run on three hits with a two Ks and one walk.
